Cassandra Simmons tracks ghosts in some of the scariest places in Ontario. She's only 13 years old, but she's not even a wee bit nervous about the job.
She might have be a bit perturbed when some mysterious communication upset disconnected her audio from Ghost Trackers command headquarters, if she'd known about it. But only the television viewing audience and host Joe MacLeod were aware of what happened.
Simmons, a Grade 8 student at Allandale Heights Public School, is currently appearing on YTV's Ghost Trackers, which airs on YTV Fridays at 7 p.m. It's her first major role.
The reality-based show has young actors entering haunted premises across Ontario with state-of-the-art equipment to see if they can find any evidence of the supernatural.
The viewing audience can watch it unfold and see how each tracker is rated by three peer judges.
Winners of each round move on to the semifinals, and then, the finals, April 25. In addition to the ghost tracker title, the winner has the opportunity to appear as one of the judges in future episodes.
"At first, when I went into the house, I was kind of skeptical if anything was going to happen," said Simmons, who has finished shooting, but can't reveal who won before the final show airs.
"There are moments when you get pretty freaked out," she said.
That would be when her parabolic microphone picks up some unusual noises, which may indicate the presence of a ghost.
Simmons said she definitely believed in ghosts before the show, and even more so now, after she's trekked through some haunted locations. Still, the only nerves she had were from an acting standpoint.
Simmons has wanted to be an actor for as long as she can remember.
Most of that desire is rooted in all the shows she watches. It is her goal to act on the soap As the World Turns. She is the third generation in her family to watch the show.
Simmons has been dancing since age five, taking ballet and jazz in Toronto, where her family lived until they moved to Barrie in 2006. She has also taken some classes at the John Robert Powers acting school.
Simmons has also taken singing lessons, but prefers acting and dancing.
The first audition, Simmons auditioned for Ghost Trackers. Since then, she has also appeared as a featured dancer in a kid's video called Get Up 'N' Move. Its focus is on fitness and healthy eating. She can also be seen as an extra (school girl) in an upcoming TV movie about Anne Shirley's life before the orphan went to live with Marilla and Mathew. L.M. Montgomery immortalized the character in her book, Anne of Green Gables.
