Guardian reporter Jen Foster takes a ghoulish walk through Dinnington...
By Jen Foster
A DINNINGTON 'ghostbuster' who spends his spare time investigating sightings of the paranormal has set up a ghost-walking group.
Barry Lambert, 42, is fascinated by stories of ghouls and spirits and says that South Yorkshire is one of the country's most haunted regions.
Moved by his enthusiasm, I joined Barry on a night walk from Dinnington to Anston Stones Wood on Saturday.
Meeting at 8.30pm, we set off across the fields as Barry told tales of mysterious sightings and strange lights.
"We have captured a lot of 'orbs' on camera, which are circles of light believed to be a sign of a ghostly presence," he explained.
"There have also been sightings of a black figure that has brushed past various members of our group."
As the dark closed in, Barry seemed to have a story ? a horrific murder, a wandering spirit, a dead body ? for just about every corner and field en route.
Pointing at some steps alongside Anston Stones Wood, he said: "We have seen a small child appear in front of us just there. It really frightened some people who were out with us."
"It was about six feet away and was just there looking up at us."
On a previous night walking in the same area, the group put a video camera inside one of the caves.
"One of the sounds on the recording was a growling sound, just like a monster. There was also the sound of footsteps," he told me.
Barry walks through the woods at every opportunity, and says he enjoys sharing the experience of being outside as well as the chance to try and spot something out of the ordinary.
"One of the women who comes out with us suffers from agoraphobia and normally doesn't like going on walks," he said.
"But when it's dark, she feels a lot safer and likes to come out with us."
Whether you believe in ghostly happenings or not, you can't fail to learn a lot from a few hours out with Barry ? he is a font of interesting stories and local information.
I can't say my cyncism towards the paranormal was much swayed by my three-hour effort at ghost hunting.
I made sure to search every cave, hole and corner where ghosts had been seen before but I still didn't see anything beyond shadows.
Perhaps other people will have better luck and I'll be happy to take a look at their photos.
