Investigation at hotel
A NORTH-EAST legend that claims the former owner of a hotel was entombed in the basement is set to be investigated.
Kemnay hotelier Malcolm Edwards is to open up a cellar wall in the Burnett Arms after an infrared probe camera revealed what appears to be a framed photograph and a box.
It is said former landlady Maggie Duffton died in 1931 and had three coffins made ? one to be buried in a family grave in Kemnay churchyard and the other two, one containing her body and the other her money ? to be walled-up in the depths of the hotel.
Malcolm said: ?There is something there.
?The picture is hazy, but it?s definitely box-like.
?There is also what appears to be a book or a photo propped at the far end.?
Stonemason Karl Bisset is preparing to open up a cellar wall next month.
Malcolm used a security camera to peer into the interior through an aperture found below the rafters.
He said: ?This shape appeared on the monitor.
?It was creepy, and confirmation something is in there.?
There has been several reported sightings of a phantom figure in different parts of the premises.
An excavation, on July 11, will take about two hours and a camera in the beer cellar will record the breaking open operation and beam it up to villagers watching on a large screen in the bar above.
Malcolm said: ?If we do find a coffin, or two, we will immediately seal the wall up and call in police.
?Meanwhile, I have granted permission to a local paranormal investigation society to hold a seance in the beer cellar this Friday evening.?
The hotelier said opening the cellar from above would involve cutting through substantial floors and beams.
