Boomers' key to happiness is not in their checkbooks but in their hearts, says Sonia Choquette, author, psychic and workshop leader. The 48-year-old wife and mother says she divines truth not from books, although she has written eight, but from something she inherited from her mother: her sixth sense, intuition.
Choquette, who lives in Chicago with her husband and two daughters, is unabashed about describing herself as a psychic and adamant that it's easy to teach people how to tap into the same inner tuning fork that can lead them to answers and solutions.
She says her workshops around the country attract middle-age people who are into their careers, have raised their children and find themselves asking how they wound up feeling vaguely dissatisfied and unfulfilled.
"They've played by the rules and got what they got, but it's not what they wanted."
Question: Why do you think boomers find themselves feeling that there must be something more?
Answer: It's our generation. We experienced a lot. We were promised a lot. I speak to people all the time whose lives are good but incomplete and who say there has got to be more.
Many have reached a point in life where things have fallen apart: Their marriages; their jobs have been downsized. And they don't know how to begin reinventing their lives.
Q: You call yourself a psychic. Isn't that off-putting for most people?
A: I love that word. It's a word that cuts through. It means "I see you," and that can be intimidating.
Having a psychic sense has been demonized. But your gut feeling, your intuition, your psychic self knows things in an accurate way. It's an inner knowing that transcends Google.
Q: Is that what you call the sixth sense?
A: The sixth sense. It's a biological reality of your being. It's a legitimate sense like smell, sight and touch. It exists in everyone and lies dormant most of our lives.
Q: But people talk about their gut reaction and bad vibrations all the time.
A: It's the difference between good and excellent. Or someone who is trying and someone who is mastering. When you are connected to your vibe, you make better decisions. It's someone whose intuition enhances every part of their life. People are settling for being semi-awake.
Q: What's the first thing you teach?
A: The very first tool is to let people know your sixth sense is in your heart, not in your head. I tell people not to bring a notebook. People are too in their head.
