SHAH ALAM: Fascination or obsession with the supernatural is drawing huge crowds to the Exhibition of Ghosts, Genies and Coffins at the Sultan Alam Shah Museum.
Museum antiquities assistant director Intan Salina Idrus said more than 1,000 people came to view the exhibition on its opening on Tuesday, despite it being a work day.
However, unlike other previous museum exhibitions on death and the paranormal the current one features real genies, ghosts and jenglots (ghouls) in their physical form.
These exhibits from Museum Nurul A? Ala in Kuang, Selangor also include wayang kulit (shadow puppets) made with combinations of animal hide and human skin is proving to be a crowd puller.
Intan said the items belonged to Safuan Abu Bakar, a religious teacher who runs the private museum and organisers of the exhibition have gone to extraordinary lengths to verify the authenticity of the exhibits.
"All the exhibits from the collections have been X-rayed and sent for DNA testing, and we found they contained human bone and blood."
Safuan, 48, on hand to ensure that his exhibits are handled with care said that he started his private museum in 1993 in order to educate as well as to prove that the supernatural really does exits.
The sufi master said that many of the toyols (genies) and jenglots were captured because they were disturbing people, while other exhibits were obtained from neighbouring countries.
Safuan said the creatures on display are actually alive but their spirits are held in abeyance or locked in their physical form by him.
"I have the ability to control them."
The three-month exhibition is open to the public from 9.30am tol 10pm
Tickets for the exhibition which will run till Oct 4 are RM5 for adults and RM2 for children.
