SEMINOLE-Did a lightning bolt bring down a sign from above? A Gaines County family believes that`s what happened to a tree in their front yard.
Eliseo and Virginia Garza of Seminole loved their tree before the November lightning storm. But since then, their affection for the tree has changed as now it does more than just give shade, it has become a validation of their faith.
Eliseo and Virginia Garza are devout Catholics. Recent health problems have tried the couple, but they say their diligent faith has been recognized in a unique way.
"In 2005, we had a lightning (bolt) hit the tree, and in time, the tree started healing. The Virgin Mary started to appear," says Virginia.
Eliseo is recovering from two open-heart surgeries and says the tree healing from the lightning is a sign that God healed his scars. Virginia says that since the Virgin has appeared, her ills have been healed as well.
"I feel good," she says. "I`m a happy woman."
The Garza`s daughter, Norma, says for Catholics, this sighting is special; so special that detractors won`t dampen the spirit of the sighting.
"I think its a blessing," she says.
A blessing the Garzas want to share with anyone who cares to stop by.
"All they have to do is... stop by and see her," says Virginia.
The Garzas didn`t pray for lightning to strike their tree and don`t know why this has happened to them. But no matter the reason, they`re happy she`s chosen to appear in their tree.
Virginia and Eliseo say at least two people who have visited the tree have been healed of sickness or injury and for that reason, they welcome anyone who cares to stop by. The Garzas live at 510 N.W. Ave. I in Seminole.
