We're actively working the information they've given us. Lane County Sergeant Spence Slater describes the help two nationally known psychics have provided in an unsolved double murder case.
While he won't reveal details that may jeopardize the investigation, he is able to say they're are now looking at four or five people in the case.
It's the first time Lane County Sheriff's office has worked with a psychic, and so far it's been a positive experience.
Sgt. Slater starts at the beginning. "We knew we had execution style murders. We knew we had very little evidence at the scene. During the Fourth of July weekend, 2005, the bodies of 54-year old Stevan Haugen and 56-year old Jeanette Bauman and their dog were found in the Willamette National Forest south of Oakridge. All three were shot to death.
Sgt. Slater adds, "these people were shot, then they were shot again, and the combination of the weapons, the way the scene ended up - it was just brutal.
He adds not only was there little evidence left behind, we had absolutely nobody in their background that would give us a reason why these people would be killed." Haugen and Bauman were both well-liked high school teachers.
They were starting out on a holiday weekend camping trip with their dog in the Willamette National Forest. Investigators say their bodies were found July first. He says the couple hadn't yet unpacked their vehicle.
Seven months into the investigation the Lane County Sheriff's office took a call from producers at the Discovery Channel. They were working with two nationally known psychics, who wanted to help the Haugen-Bauman case. Sgt. Slater remember "originally I said no, because of the news of the case. But then you think, it would put that case on television, for an hour.
In May, a Discovery Channel crew documented meetings between the psychics and Lane County Sheriff's Detectives. Psychics Pam Coronado and Laurie Campbell knew nothing of the case. They worked separately with detectives and shared what they felt happened at the crime scene. Sgt. Slater says both described details only investigators would know, for example they felt the bodies were moved together.
Sgt. Slater says if you were to look at crime scene photos of this, they would look staged.
The Discovery Channel documentary aired in October. National exposure and input from the psychics opened new leads. Sgt. Slater says I'm giving them a lot of credibility.
He's hopeful one of those leads will quickly solve the case.
