Lee County is buying a 126-acre island that has been plundered for treasure and rumored to be haunted.
Lee County commissioners voted to spend $2.5 million to conserve Cayo Pelau, a historically and environmentally sensitive island off the northeastern tip of Boca Grande.
The island, which consists mostly of wetland mangroves, has been rumored to hold pirate's treasure.
Archaeologist Charles Blanchard says the island was the center of all the bogus treasure maps of the harbor. He says tales of the island's haunting began with its use as a burial site for important people in prehistoric times.
