TWO cleaners who saw ghosts as well as councillors at County Hall have hung up their vacuums, mops and feather dusters.
Pearl Pierce, 70, and Anne Bulpitt, 66, known as the dynamic duo, clocked up more than 60 years of combined service.
Anne, of Ash Road, Newport, has worked in County Hall for 32 years, starting as one of a team of cleaners directly employed by the IW Council. She was then supervised by a Mrs Jones and worked in the old part of County Hall for the first ten years.
She recalled how Mrs Jones would have her guts for garters if she crossed over to the new part of the building, so she and Pearl worked apart.
It was only when Nviro took over the contract more than ten years ago that they joined forces. Pearl, after working in County Hall for 30 years, has many stories and the strangest has to be about a ghost.
She came out one of the offices on the third floor when she saw a man walk across the floor. She looked at him and asked who he was but he vanished.
Anne also met the County Hall ghost while walking along the corridor on floor two, towards the education entrance. She turned at the bottom of the steps to see a man walking by the wall, which he suddenly disappeared into.
Pearl, of Manor Crescent, is married to Raymond, who is retired but used to work at Island packaging. They have two children, Julie and David, and six grandchildren.
Anne has two children, Dawn and Darryl, who live on the Island, and four grandchildren
