Ghost Hunter's Night is a spooky tour for patrons of the Jerome Grand Hotel, paranormal enthusiasts, history buffs and curious minds in general.
The tour looks at the haunted history of the Jerome Grand Hotel and Liberty Theatre. The hotel was built as a hospital in 1926 by the Phelps Dodge Mining Corp. Perched on the side of Mingus Mountain, it is the tallest structure in the Verde Valley and was closed in 1950 as mining operations ended.
Tour patrons are welcome to bring cameras in hopes of photographing a ghost. Some ghost-hunting equipment is supplied, such as electromagnetic sensors and heat sensors to locate a possible ghostly presence.
Reported apparitions include a bearded miner, a 6-year-old boy, an old woman in a fine white dress, the shadowy figure of a man, and the most popular haunt: fireman engineer Claude M. Harvey, who was mysteriously killed by the hotel's Otis elevator in 1935.
The free tour begins at 5 p.m. every Tuesday after Labor Day. It is limited to eight guests and lasts about 90 minutes. After the tour, have dinner at the hotel's Asylum restaurant. Reservations are suggested.
