As Americans, we are obsessed with UFO's, the mystical Atlantis, Lochness, and aliens. Why is it the general public considers scientists "geeks". Why is it that society cares more about these myths that have no evidence, than about scientific puzzlers like mutating viruses, the discovery of the anicent civilization of Ebla recently, or about outer space and its gases? its time for Americans to wake up.
BEFORE I BEGIN, I WOULD LIKE TO CITE THAT SEVERAL QUOTES IN THE
FOLLOWING PASSAGE HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM CHAPTER 1 OF THE MOST PRECIOUS
THING: THE DEMON-HAUNTED WORLD BY CARL SAGAN
"We want to know about science. It's just that all the science had gotten filtered out before it reached us. Our cultural motifs, our educational system, our communications media" have failed us. The average Americans accept these myths as possible truth backed by meager or no evidence when in fact they are pseudoscience. Pseudoscience is blinding us. "There is still a religion that denies the germ theory of disease, if prayer fails, the faithful would rather see their children than give them antibiotics". Where is the world headed to? Ignorance is very dangerous. Why are we so mistrusting and so ignorant of science? IS it because we are afraid that scientific evidence will falsify our beliefs/religions? Is it because we don't trust the same science that created nuclear weapons, CFC's, and nerve gas?
Are we subconciously afraid of the mad scientist since childhood? When did we find science more interesting as kids than we do now? We used to wonder about he grass, why its green and about how cool it would be to now why the sky is blue. Did we lose interest because somewhere down the road science confused us with its complicated words and boring textbooks? Is it because "it is much easier to present pseudoscience to the general public than science"? Why are we so drawn to pseudoscience? Is it because we don't want rational explanation? Is it because as humans we want that feeling/mystery that there is a higher power? That not everything is in our control? That we are not reponsible for uncovering all the mysteries? Is this why we seek religion? "Pseudoscience speaks to powerful emotional needs that science often leaves unfilled."
Why are people ignorant in science? Is it because they believe that what you know can't hurt you? This theory is old but we need to change this ancient thinking. That is the first step. We do that by challenging pseudoscience in the media instead of spending half an hour on celebs and a few minutes on a discovery, we should educate this nation and make people aware of the situation. We should educate the general public through every media source available. People need to realize the full gravity of this situation. Why is it that you are required only 2 years in science to graduate but you need 4 in english? Science has been unappreciated for years. Its time to act.
