A thunderstorm added to the mystery Tuesday night as the mentalist duo Jeff and Tessa Evason performed in Carter Hall.
The Evasons used telepathy and extra sensory perception to entertain.
"Don't get emotionally involved, it's just a blindfold," Jeff Evason said. A member of the audience was asked to check the blindfold for any communication devices. Tessa Evason put the blindfold on and said she closes her eyes under the blindfold to block out all the light.
Jeff Evason moved through the audience choosing people at random. Tessa Evason would guess the first and last name of the people chosen.
As the evening progressed, so did the powers of the mind the Evasons used to amaze USI. Jeff Evason asked for a tall woman to volunteer to help, and then chose four men from the audience to assist them. He asked the woman to sit in a chair on the stage and asked the four men to clasp their hands and extend their index fingers upward. He had the men place their extended fingers under the woman's knees, and arms. He then asked the men to place their hands on the top of the woman's head beginning with each placing their left hand and then their right. Jeff Evason counted to nine and asked the men to place their clasped hands under the woman's arms and knees again. He then asked the men to lift the woman using only their index fingers. The men lifted the woman high above their heads before putting her down.
"I was a total skeptic," junior nursing student Sarah Alvey said.
Alvey was asked to sit in a chair on stage and choose someone from the audience she knew to stand in the aisle. Jeff Evason talked about auras and double exposed photos. He walked around Alvey to prove there was nothing around her. Tessa Evason was standing in the aisle next to the person Alvey chose and touched him on each shoulder. As Jeff Evason was talking, Alvey had her eyes closed. He then asked a member of the audience to take a picture with a Polaroid camera. An image of an elderly woman's face appeared in the photo on the screen above Alvey. Alvey said she could feel something push her three times. She said the image in the photo "freaked her out."
The duo began performing in 1983 after meeting through a mutual friend. They have performed all over the world and have been featured on television shows on FOX's Powers of the Paranormal, NBC's World's Greatest Magic V and the Discovery Channel's Grand Illusions, the Story of Magic
