Author E. Ashley Rooney of Lexington is known primarily for her books about architecture. For her lucky 13th book, however, she mastered a different kind of storytelling: ghost stories.

Rooney's husband, D. Peter Lund, took nearly all of the photographs.
While each tale has its basis in local lore, Rooney fictionalized them so each story is her own creation.
Using the setting of a country inn in Lenox where electrical surges and strange sensations are commonly reported, for example, she writes about two sisters who had once lived there and quarreled over the same man before his death.
"It was so much fun to let my imagination loose, rather than sticking to the facts," said Rooney, who added that she believes in a spiritual world, though she has never seen a ghost.
"I hope readers also learn a little bit about the Berkshire hills. They're not only beautiful, but they're filled with a lot of great stories."
