THE VILLAGES ? Even members of the Parapsychology Club couldn?t have predicted the response to their very first Psychic Fair.
The crowds waiting to get into the fair?s two rooms stretched the length of Mulberry Grove Center in two lines on Saturday, filled with people waiting for a chance to learn about topics such as chakra healing, reiki, biofeedback, intuitive numerology, and aura photography.
In addition to the reading and demonstrations, there was a vendors room where fairgoers could purchase crystals, soy candles, books, jewelry and other merchandise.
When asked if the club expected such a turnout, Ina Anderson, one of the club?s founding members, replied with a smile, ?I did. Nobody else did.?
Anderson said this was the first Psychic Fair ever held in The Villages.
?People are interested in these things, and today, people are willing to say that they are interested,? Anderson said. ?They are willing to explore new ideas.?
Anderson said the Parapsychology Club was founded about a year and a half ago.
?It was founded as an opportunity to explore new ideas,? Anderson said. ?Each month we have a speaker on a different topic. If that topic speaks to a member, they can explore it in depth on their own. Most members are glad to see that other people are thinking about these things.?
Laurie Amato read her tarot cards for fairgoers. She is the author of ?Tarot Insights? and a member of the Parapsychology Club.
?The tarot works through synchronicity, meaningful coincidences,? the Village of Bonnybrook resident explained. ?The person asking the question, the cards and myself are all connected. The person may have a question, but the card gives the answer they need. It may not be what they want, but it is what they need to hear.?
Mary Wilbert listened intently as Amato interpreted the cards that came up during her reading.
?I was just interested,? said the Country Club Hills resident after her reading was finished. ?I wasn?t sure about it, but I am glad I tried it.?
The Rev. Sharon Manger of Gainesville offered channeling to fairgoers.
?I am an ordained minister in the Alliance of Divine Love,? Manger said. ?To me, God, or the universal consciousness, is like a river. I pick up messages about people, things that God wants them to know.?
Manger said she has been channeling since the age of 11, but publicly has been a channeler only for the last five or six years.
Ann Schilling offered demonstrations of her biofeedback system. A club member, she demonstrated how her system could measure ?thousands of frequencies? in the body to spot imbalances. According to a flyer she handed out, the machine would use ?subtle frequencies? to bring the person back into balance.
?I?m certified to use the machine,? Schilling said. ?I?m also a reiki master and was a technical writer for General Electric, so this appeals to both sides of my personality.?
Nancy Renna of Santo Domingo was clearly enjoying the hubbub.
?My friend is a member of the club, and I go to meetings occasionally,? Renna said. ?I love the mystique of it, and some do seem to have some answers to back up that mystique.?
