WATERBURY -- Residents who went to Library Park on Saturday expecting to see ghosts stumbled onto a concert instead.
Smoking Gun Research Agency, a Westport-based investigator of the paranormal, canceled its scheduled "spook" visit to the park Saturday afternoon after it learned that the park was hosting the Rivera-Hughes Memorial Park Festival, said Jon Nowinski, agency director.
Nowinski also said the weather Saturday was too hot for an investigation, which involves hours of walking, measuring and recording.
The organization planned to investigate the site after reportedly receiving several calls from area residents claiming they sighted fleeting figures in the park on Grand Street.
The park was the city's first burial ground, once housing as many as 2,000 graves. It served as a cemetery until the end of the 19th century, at which time the Silas Bronson Library was built and headstones and caskets were excavated and transferred to other locations.
On Saturday afternoon, people in shorts and T-shirts went to the park by the dozens to listen to live music and mingle under the sun. While no ghosts were spotted in attendance, a handful of fans of the paranormal turned out to take photos of the park.
"I came here from Bridgeport when I found out they're coming," said Mike Trapasso.
Nowinski said the organization plans to investigate the park another day, but has not yet set a date.
