PRESTON -- Even before they got a tour Monday night of the Captain Grant's B&B Inn, the seven members of the Cosmic Society of Paranormal Investigation had their equipment out testing for ghosts.
Member Margaret Scholtz of Milford arrived shortly after 6 p.m. and began snapping her digital camera.
Owners Carol and Ted Matsumoto invited the society to test for paranormal activity at the historic house, once home to Capt. William Gonzales Grant. They also invited previous guests who claim to have had unusual experiences during their stays at the inn.
The Matsumotos said they were prompted to contact the Ansonia-based paranormal investigation group because strange activities increased recently when they started cleaning out the attic.
"I've been to other places that are said to have a lot of (paranormal) activity, but the very first time we stayed here we experienced something," said Donna McCabe of Milford, who has stayed at the Route 2A inn more than two dozen times with her mother and sister. "The first day, my ChapStick levitated out of my purse."
By 9 p.m., society member Donna Kent and her group were convinced there was a lot to investigate and they needed to return.
"She just got a big, huge white orb on my back," Kent said, after society member Leanne Root, of Shelton, took a digital photo and showed it to her. "The stories alone pique my interest. Plus, I want to see what I feel more. It seems intriguing so far."
An orb is the easiest way for a spirit energy to present itself, Kent said. But the presence of an orb in a camera isn't always supernatural.
It could indicate moisture, dust particles or a reflection in the camera, Kent said.
"We do find a lot of orbs in haunted places," Kent said.
The team didn't limit its research to the house. It visited an overgrown cemetery behind the house and headed across the street to the Poquetanuck Cemetery, where the Grant family is buried.
All the while, they took more photos, where orbs were captured, Kent said.
By 9 p.m. the group was back at the house where Matsumoto had gathered guests to share their stories with paranormal investigators.
Kent said they would have to go over all the data collected before making any final determinations.
