PSU paranormal conference to start today
UNIVERSITY PARK ? Halloween is coming early this year as the Penn State Paranormal Research Society kicks off its fifth annual national paranormal conference, UNIV-CON5 this weekend.
The society announced in July that UNIV-CON is now the largest paranormal conference in the country. More than 1,000 enthusiasts from around the United States are expected to attend.
The success is due largely to the popularity of ??tentpole?? lecturers Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, stars of Sci Fi Channel?s hit show, ??Ghost Hunters,?? which starts its third season this year.
Other experts and paranormal stars are speaking this year, including John Oliver of Court TV?s ??Haunting Evidence,?? Chris Fleming of ??Dead Famous?? and legendary investigator Lorraine Warren.
Warren and her late husband, Ed (who died two weeks ago), are responsible for investigating the infamous Amityville haunting in the 1970s.
UNIV-CON starts at 7 p.m. today in 100 Thomas with speaker Chris Fleming. Fleming will show evidence and talk about some of his most horrific paranormal experiences. Later that evening, select students and attendees will go on a ghost hunt.
On Friday, all the UNIV-CON speakers will get on stage at Heritage Hall to hold a sort-of CNN Crossfire event, hosted by Darkness Radio.
Oliver will speak at 9:15 p.m. in 100 Thomas about his experience working with police on cold cases. After his event, there will be a haunted horse-and-wagon tour of the Penn State campus. There will also be another ghost hunt and reception at the Allen Street Grill.
On Saturday, various workshops ranging from psychic vampires, demonology and paranormal equipment will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the HUB.
Afterward, guests will attend the haunted dinner theater at Days Inn, where the State College Theatre will host an old-fashioned seance.
Hawes and Wilson will speak about their well-known chronicles as seen on ??Ghost Hunters?? at 8 p.m. Saturday. Afterward, there will be another haunted horse-and-wagon tour, as well as ghost hunt.
On Sunday, workshops will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Warren will close the conference by speaking about some of her most famous investigations.
UNIV-CON is a University Park Allocations Committee-funded event. It is free to all students, faculty and staff. Others must pay $45 per person. Children ages 15 and under can attend for half price. For more information and a schedule of events, visit www.pennstateprs.com/conference.shtml.
