ABC reporter Bob Woodruff has recounted a brief near-death experience, or perhaps more simply an out-of-body experience, during his stint in Iraq, as a result of a blast from a roadside "improvised explosive device."
"And then I remember driving along in the tank, up that road, and standing up outside through the open hatch at the top," he said. "When the IED actually exploded, I don't remember that," Woodruff continued. "But I do remember at that moment I saw my body floating below me and ? a whiteness ? I just saw something."
Moments later, he woke up in the tank and saw his cameraman Doug Vogt. "When I fell into the tank, I looked up and I saw Doug Vogt sitting right here across from me, and I know that I was spitting a lot of blood out of my mouth," he said. "And I looked up at Doug, and I saw his eyes big and afraid, and I saw the blood dripping down his face, just asking if we were still alive. And then that's really the last that I remember."
Woodruff was badly injured and took months to recover. Of course, his NDE/OBE proves nothing about the metaphysical reality of these experiences; it's just interesting that a fairly prominent journalist would report it.
In other, somewhat related news, I wanted to remind readers that Irreducible Mind, a mammoth book exploring evidence for extracerebral consciousness and considering various hypotheses on the subject, is now in print. I admit that so far I've been deterred from buying it by its length (800 pages) and cost ($80). Still, the book is said to be a groundbreaking achievement. Only one Amazon customer review has been posted so far; the reader gives the book five stars and calls it "brilliantly insightful" and "an instant classic."
The Amazon sales page is here http://www.amazon.com/Irreducible-Mind- ... F8&s=books
The book appears to be backordered at both BarndesandNoble.com and Powells.com, and even Amazon has a four-to-six-week wait. Somebody tell the publisher to print more copies!
