A Fairfield-based production company plans to release its inaugural film, a documentary on the paranormal, on DVD May 1.
The documentary, "The Other Side: Giving up the Ghost," was filmed mostly in Gettysburg over the course of summer and fall 2006, but includes segments shot in Allentown; Amherst, N.Y.; Philadelphia; Richmond, Va.; and St. Louis.
The DVD release marks the first time people in the Gettysburg area will be able to watch the film, which Exspiro Productions finished last fall.
"We had a private screening in the fall, for people involved with the making of the film," Exspiro cofounder Andrew Keyser said.
And the movie's changed a bit since then. The company changed some things around and re-edited parts of the film.
Keyser and his wife Tonya, of Fairfield, submitted the film to three festivals, but none picked it up.
"But Slamdance (Film Festival in California) asked us to send another screening copy," Keyser said. "For possible distribution, I guess."
The 80-minute documentary contains interviews and tag-along footage from paranormal research teams and various paranormal-related organizations.
"We talked to people who run ghost tours, tour guides, people on the tours, skeptics and psychology experts," said Tonya Keyser, Exspiro's other cofounder, in October.
The company shot and edited the movie for less than $10,000, Tonya Keyser said.
While there is a lot of interest in the paranormal in Adams County, Tonya Keyser said she is not sure if the phenomena people report are because of that interest or the area itself.
"That's one of the things the film explores," she said in October.
The Keysers began researching the film seven years ago, as a possible book. But they thought a book might be too dry, and a film would convey their project better.
Andrew Keyser said the film led him and Tonya to further pursue paranormal investigations.
"We're interested in not only what they're doing but making it more scientific," he said.
The Keysers are currently putting together the first issue of "The Journal of Paranormal Research," for which Andrew Keyser said they've already received many submissions.
The DVD costs $19.99, and will be available first through the company's Web site, but Keyser said Exspiro plans to sell it through various shops in Gettysburg and eventually Amazon.com.
