ST. CHARLES ? It isn't every day the parks department gets a request to spend the night in a cemetery to look for ghosts.
But that's just what Patricia Wallen is asking.
"I'm a psychic," said Wallen, a disabled former school bus driver. "I can feel when something's going to happen to somebody."
Wallen said she's scouted for paranormal activity at other cemeteries and at old houses across the metropolitan area as part of another group and now wants to strike out on her own. Wallen wants permission to spend one night at city-owned Oak Grove Cemetery.
Because of the cemetery's age, she said, she wants to check out Oak Grove, which was founded in 1860. "The older the better," she said. The cemetery also includes remains moved from an earlier city cemetery.
Wallen, 54, of St. Charles, recently formed a group called Paranormal and Spirit Seekers. She says all six members ? including her daughter, sister and niece ? plan to take part in the Oak Grove outing if it's approved.
She said they'd take photos and use electromagnetic force detectors, which react to humans and electrical objects.
Parks officials, who oversee the cemetery on West Clay Street, don't know yet if they'll let Wallen spend the night looking for ghosts. The final decision will be up to the department's director.
A cemetery advisory board member, funeral home president Nancy Paul, said she and others on the panel have mixed feelings. She said Wallen's idea sounds interesting but that the board also would consider how relatives of people buried at Oak Grove might react.
"We certainly wouldn't want to offend anybody," Paul said.
