Lush Life explores a different kind of nightlife ghosts, asGhosthunters comes to Hartford
The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) from Ghost Hunters on the SciFi Channel visited the Hartford Conservatory on Asylum Avenue in December 2005 to investigate rumors of paranormal activity. Edie caught up with TAPS investigator Brian Harnois to obsess about the episode, airing later this week.
E: I know the episode hasn?t aired yet, but what can you tell me about the investigation?
H: It was a good investigation. All I can tell you is that it was a tricky set-up because there were two buildings and we knew that we couldn?t put all the equipment in one building. So what we did was park the van right in the middle of the parking lot and ran the wires from the van to both buildings. It took an extra 45 minutes to set up, so it was tricky.
E: Did you find anything in Hartford?
H: I can?t tell you that.
E: Come on!
H: No, that breaks my contract!
E: I had to ask.
E: You went to the hotel from The Shining this year, too.
H: Yes, we did.
E: How cool was that?
H: One of the best places I?ve ever been. It?s creepy, it really is. You go in there and you?re just waiting to go around the corner and see the two little kids standing there.
E: You didn?t bring Big Wheels, did you?
H: You know, [we] were going to, we had it all planned out but we couldn?t find one, you can?t find them anymore.
E: Do you get sick of being compared to Ghostbusters?
H: Well, the thing is I don?t mind it because I love the movie, I can recite every single line of that movie. The whole thing is with that, though, is we don?t catch ghosts. We don?t have the proton packs and the traps. Trust me, if we did and there was a way of catching a ghost, we would.
E: So, are you disappointed or relieved when you can debunk a haunting?
H: Very relieved, actually. Trust me, every single place we go we wish we could catch something. But it?s nice sometimes to debunk them especially when you?re going into a private residence where people are really freaking out, and we?re like, okay, it?s not that it?s just some pipes in the wall, or it?s not a black shadow it?s the way the light is reflecting off the window when a car goes by. It makes them feel really good because they no longer think the house is haunted, they just think they had an overactive imagination ... It makes us feel better that we can walk out of a house where somebody knows that it?s no longer haunted.
E: Do you ever get scared?
H: All the time. I?m always scared. It?s the adrenaline rush, you?re going into a dark corner of a haunted building and you don?t know what?s going to pop out at you ... Ghost hunting is like gambling. You go 80 percent of the time without finding something and you feel so down about it. And then the one time that you go into a house and all hell breaks loose, and you just want to go back at it the next day. It?s like an addiction, it really is.
