A new Harris Interactive Poll, out today, asked 2,455 U.S. adults earlier this month about believing in everything from heaven and hell to UFOs and witches.
Sizeable minorities said they believed in ghosts (41 percent), UFOs (35 percent) and witches (31 percent).
The poll also asked about the belief in creationism and evolution and took into account a person's religious affiliation. Roughly equal numbers believe in Darwin's theory of evolution (42 percent) and creationism (39 percent).
Many of the results aren't surprising. The vast majority of American's believe in God (82 percent), and large majorities of the public believe in miracles (79 percent), heaven (75 percent), angels (74 percent). Harris notes that the overall numbers are very similar to the last time the poll was conducted in 2005, but added that if there was anything to be taken away from the results it's that slightly more people believe in miracles, angels and witches than did two years ago.
While a belief in God was very common, religiosity was a different story. One in five Americans described themselves as "very religious." That said, 70 percent described themselves as either very (21 percent) or somewhat (49 percent) religious.
