While not ordinarily a hub for supernatural activity, the Holiday Inn's Conference Room A was abuzz with psychic energy this weekend as clairvoyants converged on Edmonton.
From Friday to yesterday, seven of "Western Canada's top psychics" served up spiritual guidance to handfuls of Edmontonians, myself included.
While skeptical, I was secretly hoping that my tarot card reading would be so accurate I would have no choice but to believe that the woman sitting across from me could indeed see the future.
So needless to say, I was disappointed when Oren asked me where I wanted to live and if I wanted to have children.
Maybe I have inflated expectations for what a psychic can predict, but these were things I felt she shouldn't have to know to tell me what she saw.
I didn't want to think she was just telling me what I wanted to hear.
And then she said something I didn't expect.
"You have a bit of an attitude," Oren told me. "And that's fine, attitude is a good thing as long as you use it in a positive way. You have a bit of a tendency to use it in a negative way at times."
But in the long run, it would serve me well, she said.
After my reading with Oren, I had my "angelic aura" read by way of Kirlian photography.
A handout I received with the photo explained that everyone is "clothed in an electromagnetic field composed of innumerable combinations of subtle matter emanating from (their) state of being."
My emanations are pink, said Darlene, an expert on the subject.
Visible in my aura are several figures from my past lives, of which I have many - something Oren told me, too.
Coincidence? I think not.
I have been a woman in Victorian England as well as a young, male con artist some time before that.
I have been East Indian, First Nations and, oddly enough, a Confederate soldier.
I buy that I was a 19th-century Brit (what else could explain my allegiance to the Royal Family?) but a Confederate? I think not.
And what of the most-pressing question for Edmontonians: What does 2008 hold for the Oilers?
"You don't want to hear my prediction on the Oilers," she said. "They're not going to win the Stanley Cup."
I didn't think so.
