WOODWARD -- Woodward County residents have donated money to pay the expenses of a psychic who they hope can help authorities find the body of a 6-year-old boy who has been missing since 2002.
Searchers have looked throughout northwestern Oklahoma for Logan Tucker but have thus far been unsuccessful. They even scoured a Woodward landfill for several months in 2006 but found nothing.
A Woods County jury convicted Logan's mother, Katherine Rutan-Pollard, of first-degree murder last year and sentenced her to life in prison. Rutan-Pollard has said Logan went away with a relative and that she hasn't seen him since. She has denied killing her son because he interfered with her lifestyle, as prosecutors alleged during her trial.
Sheriff Les Morton commented recently that he was open to any method of finding the child, including the use of psychics. That's when local residents decided to bring in psychic Jeff Baker.
According to the Web site solvesmart.com, Baker was contacted by the family of missing Internal Revenue Service Agent Veronica Ruiz, who was found on Mount Tamalpais near San Francisco earlier this month.
The 25-year-old Ruiz died of a gunshot wound to the head that appeared to have been self-inflicted, Marin County, Calif., authorities said.
Baker appeared in November on America's Psychic Challenge, on which he was able to quickly locate a boy in the desert. He could not immediately be reached Friday for comment.
"His airfare for him to come here was paid by donations from people who wanted to see this done," Morton told the Woodward News.
Because Baker is "volunteering his expertise and experience," the Sheriff's Department is not paying for the visit, Morton said. Baker is set to visit the Woodward area Feb. 7-9.
Morton said he wanted to keep Baker's visit quiet, but the news was leaked through solvesmart.com, which also asked for volunteers to help search should Baker identify a location during his visit.
"The last thing I wanted to do was to make a big deal out of it and nothing come of it," he said.
The latest attempt at finding Logan could be as unfruitful as the others, but Morton said he had to try.
"Why not take a shot at it? If it works, then we've accomplished our goal," he said.
"My deal is finding Logan. It always has been and always will be. This is just another step in that direction."
