WILLIAMSPORT ? Don?t bother asking Susan Smith to prophesy Saturday?s winning Power Ball numbers.
?That?s not my area,? the self-termed psychic and conscious channel said.
Smith, a Williamsport native, prefers to think of herself as a conduit between the abstract and corporeal worlds, not a fortune teller with a beaded curtain and a crystal ball.
?What I do is transfer the information from the energetic realm to the physical,? Smith said. ?It?s not really seeing into the future as much as accessing information.?
When people come to her, they?re usually looking for guidance on romance or health issues, changing careers or making other major life decisions, Smith said. In turn, she tries to sense their strengths and weaknesses, but doesn?t deal in specifics like names and dates.
?I?ve never felt that my job was to tell people what to do, but just give them information,? she said. ?I don?t consider myself a healer.?
In fact, she?s confident that others can learn to tap into these psychic energies if they?re open to the possibility.
?I believe everyone has these abilities on some level,? she said.
Of course, don?t expect to use your new-found knowledge for personal profit. According to Smith, people are rarely able to interpret for themselves. So what does she do when she needs information about her own life?
?I have my own teacher I turn to for advice,? she said.
If you?re still set on predicting lottery numbers or the name of your future spouse, you might try attending one of Smith?s seminars. She often conducts workshops and classes that deal with dream interpretation, unlocking psychic abilities, Tarot card reading, palmistry and meditation, both in the Williamsport area and throughout the Midwest.
It?s not going to happen instantly, but Smith maintains everyone has a thing or two to learn about psychic capabilities. When she speaks of the energetic realm, she?s referring to some type of theoretical space.
?You can?t touch it or taste it,? she said. ?It?s where our souls exist.?
If it helps, think of a conscious channel like this: There?s all this information floating around out there in the metaphysical space, and some people are more proficient in tapping into it.
?We tend to call it our intuition, and that?s really what it is,? Smith said.
Smith helps the psychic process along by analyzing the pattern of lines on the hands or reading Tarot cards.
While it may seem contradictory to employ a material object like a hand or a deck of cards as a way to reach something immaterial, Smith sees things differently. Much like that proverb that claims ?the eyes are the window to the soul,? she believes ?the hands act as a portal or a doorway between the worlds.?
Smith said she understands that it?s a difficult concept to grasp ? as physical beings, humans are inclined to require physical proof. There will always be skeptics, people who think what she does is a bit of hocus-pocus, but Smith isn?t out to make a believer of everyone.
?My sense is that, when people are ready, I?m available, but I don?t push myself on them,? she said. ?There?s a lot of people who are afraid of what I do.
?Really, there is nothing to be afraid of, once you get to know that the energetic world is as accessible and helpful as the physical world.?
Smith began her career as a palm reader, what she now calls hand analysis, about 30 years ago.
As a tie-in for Valentine?s Day, Smith will give a free talk at 7 p.m. Saturday at Borders in the Lycoming Mall. In ?Heart and Soul: Love Connections Through Time,? she?ll address the possibilities of past lives and the concept of finding a soul mate.
Smith said she?ll be available after the talk to answer questions or do short readings.
In April, she?ll teach a four-part class on dream interpretation through Pennsylvania College of Technology?s continuing education program.
Other upcoming events are a seminar, ?Yes! You Are Psychic!,? from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 13, and an ?Esoteric Tarot? workshop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 23. Those events will be held at Smith?s office, 2128 W. Fourth St., Williamsport.
