It's taken her a few attempts, but Huntington native Lynne Logan is finding success with her latest novel, which tells the story of a troubled psychic teen putting his talents to good use.
Logan wrote her way through school, in fact, her first novel was completed when she was 12, though, by her own admission, it was "really bad." But she continued to hone her craft, eventually picking up an English degree from Marshall University.
She said that her writing slowed in the following years as she raised her kids, but five years ago, she began to get the itch again. Although she was excited by her first two novels, publishers were notably less enthusiastic.
"I submitted two different ones that were unilaterally rejected," Logan said with a laugh. "I'm the kind of person that rejection doesn't really bother me."
That resilience would prove a boon for Logan, who would have the last laugh when she found the basis for her third supernatural yarn in an unlikely place ... reality.
"I had a student who was a psychic," the former teacher said. "At first, I thought it was just coincidence, but then he handed me a list of questions and asked if he was on the right track for what was going to be on the exam. Every single question was exactly what I had written the night before."
She soon learned that the student occasionally helped his lawyer uncle choose juries, using his purported psychic abilities. The seed for Logan's next series, "The Crime Chronicles of Decker Zane," had found purchase.
Although she was inspired by her student, streetwise Decker is a far cry from the student in her classroom. When rebellious teen is busted for hacking a computer system, he narrowly avoids jail time by agreeing to help the police department with his psychic abilities. Logan said she didn't have to be a psychic to know she had something special on her hands.
"I had originally planned on just making it a novella," Logan said. "But as soon as I finished it, I knew this was the one that was going somewhere."
Her prediction would prove to be true. The first book in the series, "Through the Eyes of Sarah Sarvas" is in the 5,600s on Amazon.com, meaning that only around 5,600 books are selling better than hers on the site. Logan said that's "very good" for a first book, and that most in that genre hover around the 50,000 to 100,000 range.
Now that she's found success, Logan isn't letting go. She's currently putting the finishing touches on her next novel, as her newly-created fan base awaits the next volume in Decker Zane's adventures.
