JEFFREY WANDS doesn't have to read this column.
He already knows what it says because he is one of the nation's best psychics.
But for the rest of you, I'll go ahead and explain about this wunderkind of the spiritual world.
When the little kid blurts out "I see dead people!" in the movie "The Sixth Sense," I think of Wands because this actually happened to him.
The biography on his Web site recounts the incident:
"While watching television at the tender age of 6, Jeffrey's great-grand-
mother, Mary, appeared in front of him and spoke. What made this incident unusual is that Mary had been dead for over 23 years.
"This incident was Jeffrey's first psychic experience and was the beginning of his life work as a psychic."
Talk about scary, but like many other gifts, it took time for the youngster to understand what was happening to him. Like every child, he says he wanted to be normal - to fit in with the rest of the kids.
In his latest book, "Another Door Opens," Wands recalls the trauma in his childhood.
"I know now that I've been given a gift, but for a long time I was unable to see it as a gift. In fact, it sometimes seemed to me like a little bit of a curse.
"I like to think of myself as an ordinary guy, and I wanted other people to see me as normal, so for a long time I tried to hide - and hide from - my gift."
Fortunately for the rest of us, Jeffrey eventually realized that his gift was unique, and that it could be used to help others.
That's why he came out of the psychic closet in 2001, when he appeared on "The Maury Show." The show literally changed his life.
"It was sort of like my coming-out party," Wands writes in his new book. "But the experience also made me realize that through my work I was able to help more people than I could ever have done in any other profession I might have chosen, including the law, which had been one of my early career choices.
"Maybe in other circumstances I would have been a therapist, and in a way I am, because what I do is almost always therapeutic for my clients. It helps them to get a different, more positive perspective on what's happening in their lives."
Unfortunately, I don't have many psychic abilities, but my brothers do. My brother, another Jeffrey, remembers seeing our grandfather after he had passed away in the middle of the night. Grandpap told him "Everything will be OK! You're a good boy."
Which must have been very reassuring because my little brother was very young at the time.
In May, my baby brother, John, was rushing home to be with our dying father when he heard Dad's voice reassuring him that our mother would do fine without him. Minutes later, his police car pulled into our driveway and I went out to tell him the sad news that Dad had died just a couple minutes earlier.
So I believe the Port Washington, N.Y., author when he says he can communicate with the other side. And I'm glad he's decided to develop his talent to help others.
The subtitle of his new book explains it all - "A Psychic Explains How Those in the World of Spirit Continue to Impact Our Lives."
Wands points out that most of us think that when a loved one dies, all means of communication with him or her has closed forever.
In his book, he offers a different perception, suggesting that a unique if not incredible form of contact has opened.
"Another Door Opens" offers a dramatic tour of the beyond. Wands then rewrites the definition of death, giving us new opportunities to reach those who have gone on before us.
The author tells real-life stories of people who have used his psychic ability to reach loved ones on the other side. Even better, he explains how the wisdom of the dead has helped enrich the lives of the living.
Wands will discuss his new book at 2 p.m. Saturday at Borders, 101 S. Pine Ave., Long Beach. (562) 491-0558
