Theatre productions are not just for inside the theatre anymore. Starting Friday, October 20, Salem Community Theatre ventures out of the theatre building for its first annual haunted house.
The haunted house will be at 413 North Broadway, the old McMackin House building, and will be open at 6 p.m. for a seven-night run.
Only the back and the basement parts of the building will be used for the haunted house. The theme for the event is "Nightmare on Broadway." The Salem Community Theatre intends the house to be scary enough to create a few screams for the folks brave enough to enter. Children under 12 will be given a flashing badge so that the actors in the house can tame it down a bit when the young ones pass, making it safe and fun for all ages.
Those brave enough to venture in will experience 10 scary scenes, a maze that most will find their way out of ... eventually, special effects, floating ghosts, wandering monsters and more.
Theatre President Hal Harrison said, "For years the McMackin House hauntings have been legendary in Salem. For this week, we will just allow the ghosts of McMackin House to come out and play with our theatrical monsters and special effects. The dark passages of the McMackin House have many tales."
The haunted house will be open on October 20, 21, 25, 26, 27 and 28, and on Halloween, October 31. The house opens at 6 p.m. and closes at 9:30 p.m. on week nights and 10:30 p.m. on the weekends. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids under 12, accompanied by an adult.
All actors, security and helpers are volunteers and all money raised goes to fund projects at the Salem Theatre.
