Did you know that Canal Fulton once was home to four mortuaries, a headstone-making company and a coffin-making operation?
"It was a happening little town way back when," Sherri Brake-Recco says with a chuckle.
In her Haunted History Walks of Canal Fulton, historian and paranormal investigator Brake-Recco shares ghostly lore about the historic town.
The evening tours, which last 90 minutes and cover about a mile, include 14 Canal Fulton buildings and the Pioneer Cemetery.
The tours begin in front of a shop called A Trip in Time that was once home to Doc Bissinger. "There's an interesting story about him going out to Rogue's Hollow and digging up a freshly buried body for an autopsy," Brake-Recco says with relish. "People have claimed to have seen Doc inside the building."
Another tour stop is a warehouse on the canal, built in 1906, that was offered for sale on eBay as a haunted property. "It was the old Finefrock Furniture building. They made coffins there," she says. "An apparition of a man in a brown suit has been seen by several people, along with the smell of cigar smoke - when no one is smoking."
At the Century House restaurant, whose building once housed a mortuary, pots, pans and serving dishes have flown across the room of their own accord, Brake-Recco says, and people have seen an apparition of a tall man in a long black trenchcoat.
At Pioneer Cemetery, which is "always eerie at night, when people's imaginations take off," people have discovered mists in orbs in the photographs they have taken there. "It's a sad cemetery because a lot of children are buried there," Brake-Recco says.
Even skeptics find enjoyment in the tour's blend of history and hauntings, she says. "I make sure the husbands get a piece of ghost-hunting equipment to hold, something mechanical that makes them happy."
The battery-operated boxes measure electro-magnetic fields, and emit a screeching sound when the needle moves into the red. "It's a great sound effect when everybody's meters spike at once and all the cameras go off," Brake-Recco says.
Remaining Haunted History tours are at 8 tonight, and 8 and 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Oct. 27 and 31. Admission is $10, with children 10 and younger admitted free. Tour capacity is 40 people. Reservations are required. Call (330) 412-6114 or go to www.hauntedhistory.net
