One night in the October of the year1993, just before the potatoes were to be picked from local farms. Two boys started out with a barrow and a fork and walked down through country lanes to a farmer?s field near Rawthorne, a village near Glapwell. It took the boys a few hours digging to fill the barrow with potatoes, but they did finely get the barrow filled in the end.
They decided to take the short cut home as the work was making them both feel weary and they needed to be up the next morning for work. How ever this would take them over the hill and through Hardwick Hall. So after a long drink from their water bottles they set off first one pushing the barrow for a while, then the other taking over.
This went on for just over an hour until they got to Lady Spencer?s walk. Then they both saw an apparition coming towards them (a lady on horseback, dressed in a white frock that spread down over the horses side and at this site they dropped the barrow spreading the potatoes all over the walk and ran home as fast as they could.
That Thursday when the Chad newspaper came out the headlines was Potatoes stolen from a farmer?s field are poisonous and should not be used as food.
