The dead speak to us internally as a matter of routine. Any author who is no longer shares our present physicality, whether it was a month ago or over the centuries speaks to us through the medium of the written word, or through more contemporary choices such as audio and / or video recordings. We think nothing of this. Should someone from the 19th century sit down and see a video recording of the recently deceased, his or her immediate reaction would think this is an act of perverse black magic. In the case of the written word we transcribe the arrangement of symbols we have been programmed to translate into a variety of languages, and without the benefit of having to use our biological ears, we can listen in our own voice, to the thoughts of others long dead.
This capability to hear our own thoughts, or those transcribed into the memory of visual mediums,or those which originate in a local sense within us are all variations on a theme and the theme is the organization of energy from one field to another whether it is biochemical energy, stored energy in the form of the matter of ink and paper or the countless digital bytes that I am arranging now in an act of transcription of my thoughts to you through my internal energy systems to that of a external one and then into your internal system as you repeat my thoughts in your own voice mixed with my own. What you are experiencing at the moment are a hybrid consisting of my thoughts and your internal voice. By the time you read this, I will be somewhere else, no longer transcribing in this processing of energy and you could be almost anywhere. You are reading my memory. Yet here we are.
You are my medium in a term John C Lilly borrowed from the Pythagoreans, which is the principle of "twoness" or "otherness" which is called a Dyad, which in engineering kinematics,is what is called a linkage in a planar mechanism that has two possible assembly modes. Call them for the sake of brevity, yours and mine. But there is a third, perhaps a fourth, maybe even a fifth means of assembling or organizing coherent energy in relation to sentience. Perhaps we who depend on biochemical photonic energy have something in common with those who are no longer, as they say, are in our local time zone. Of course time itself as a term is a misnomer as it's only a measurement of relationships. In our world, time is bent in a variety of ways, by mass, by the rate of velocity various internal systems correlate data (ie; from the speed of light through your eyes by your velocity of processing recognition patterns), by gravitational forces etc. All this occurs without troubling Mr Jones on his way to the grocers but it is there. You can't see touch, taste, see or feel it directly as is not as if we could disect experiential realities by way of the senses alone.
We can perhaps infer the living and the dead share one thing in common. Perhaps it's a bad joke to say the dead "are out of it." They remain in time perhaps as I do as you read this again, although as you are reading this, I am no longer reaching out to you. I might be dead.
Where is memory in all this nonsense? Is it here with you or in your past? You can understand how language is an entanglement, the defining of spacetime relationships in terms of planetary cycles of night and day, or by a linear clock or by video or a book and even perhaps our senses. What I am attempting to accomplish is to deconstruct your fixed orientations in relation to exploring what memory is.
It is an understatement to state that your life has depended on memory. When your biological systems cease to support your personalized hive of organized potentiality as found in the bridge of memory, then what? We are no longer referring to the death of the physical body if we want to be more precise about ourselves as fodder for the grave, but rather memory, our memory. This is the fulcrum and the axis of transcendence in this little series of short essays. The root of which was a reading of this equally short essay http://www.qedcorp.com/pcr/pcr/mansfeld.html which has the entangled title of "On Jungian Transpersonal Psychology, Psychokinesis, Precognition and Remote-Viewing in Post-Modern Physics" by the ever prolific
and fascinating mind of the notorious physicist and creative gadfly, Dr Jack Sarfatti. It began with one sentence; "a momentary unification of two psychic states: the normal state of our consciousness, which moves in a flow of discursive thought and in a process of continuous perception that creates our idea of the world." Perhaps this conceptual model goes further, as it relates to the concept of memory as a preconditioning aspect of thought and perception. For those of you who are not familiar with Dr Sarfatti, his series of video interviews via You Tube on possible exotic X craft propulsion systems are well worth viewing.
Speaking of referents, in the matter of memory a ridiculous question pops up. Are you here now? How do you define being here rather than there, or for that matter, nowhere? What of memory? A deceptively simple question. The best questions are the simplest ones and the most confounding in terms of the relationships between spacetime, orientation and memory. What we are entering is a universe of the geometric and logical processes of virtual memory, where the mind utilizes a technique which gives us the impression that we have a contiguous working memory as much as the visual processes provide the same illusion. This is the Gurdjieffian theory of being born as a potentiality and possibly ceasing to exist as a potentiality rather than a coherent form of energy, because we exist in computational terms without "an address", but we are fully outfitted with the illusion of one, while we are either fragmented or lack the capacity to recall very little, which to some would be a frightening concept which relates, perhaps, in turn, for Christians to the Book of John, Chapter XVI, Verse 12, Jesus Christ wherein tells his disciples, "I have yet many things to say unto ye, but ye cannot bear them now." Interestingly the root of the word "religion" is usually traced to the Latin religare (re: back, and ligare: to bind), so that the term is associated with "being bound." which could certainly be correlated to the functioning of memory.
If you look at the memory of the species we could easily state that it is fragmented on the outside by the inside. If perception leads to thought and thought leads to conceptual models, that we experience reality through, and these in of themselves, are only products of of a feedback loop of measuring referents in the memory, then perhaps the role of memory extends beyond simply storage.
Perhaps it is indicative of a state of yet another comparative feed back loop. In other words, the past the present and the future are channeled through these self fulfilling byproducts of perception, what Robert Anton Wilson called "reality tunneling" or modeling is a creative force that is theoretically unlimited. In other words, sentience is a form of self organizing energy that creates it's own form by referents that is neither external or internal but representative of the middle ground being actualized by the reconciliation of the two. If this is so, we are neither local or non local in nature, but a creation that is both, that represents yet another reality, between the image and the observer. I think David Bohm was approaching this concept. What is fascinating in this interview is that his views corresponded with precision to the Sufi Metaphysician Ibn Al Arabi's conceptual models of comparative analysis in the measurement of observable phenomenon between similarities and the incomparable in "The Metaphysics of Imagination." Physics and Metaphysics as a singularity. That and not that as a combinatorial process of distinctions in sentient development that builds upon a widening set of measurements. At one point, if you did not know Bohm was a physicist, you would assume he was a "mystic".
If you haven't guessed by now we are in search of the nature of ghosts, who may, in turn, reveal something about the nature of non human intelligence in relation to the role of memory as a example of a multi-dimensional aspect of perception that bridges the past the present and the future all of which are linked, by way of energy in what the Buddhists call the origin state, unconditioned sentience. If so, is there some linkage between spacetime, sentience and multiple universes?
However ,using this example of a "non-existant address" is a dangerous ploy inasmuch as one has to be capable of discerning our Mr G was referring to but one aspect of sentience which exists in a larger context as a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, as he was fond of saying that if and when you entered another realm and you mistook a measuring tape for a mark, you may get tossed out or worse. All of this can be translated into a physic of consciousness which is at it's root, is the mirror called self awareness or the lack of it. What G was referring to is also found in a variety of techniques in analyzing this state we inhabit versus another. In our era's terms, we could say it's a matter of how and if we are capable of self programming versus being programmed. For example, in Buddhist terminology this "mark" is arranged as the conceptual self organization of a sentient state as potentially, at worst, one identifies oneself as a human being, then one does undergoes an autonomic oscillation between death and rebirth as a default. In other words, it is no accident that we are conceived and "live" betwixt and between in a transient state, rather than in another, which assumes there are others. On a deeper level, in terms of physics, we are singularly capable of creating our own state.
Whether you prefer cream in your coffee in order to experience "a good morning" is a mundane example of this in a microscale. This implies a certain freedom in design that we damp by bias. This refers then back to the esoteric or hidden core of Christianity wherein Man's "name" is legion, not one, but many and theres the rub. Again we find fragmentation which a visitor from another realm might be very wary of with good reason. Tony Soprano as our cultural totem kisses babies and blows up infidels in the same breath. Again, it is a state but one as we all know is subject to external influences. The outside creates the inside when the inside should create the outside. On a comparative evolutionary scale, we are currently in a dream state molded by realities that are non existent except as referents. All of this relates to memory the ability to recall a state which can either bode well or bode tragically in this regard. Consider ghosts in this specific context as representative of various states as analogous to the states of energy brought into a certain density comparable to those found in the varying states of water. It can be frozen, it can be transferable to an atmospheric state, and it can be a liquid. It's still water which then relates to the role, oddly enough, of memory. One of my Sufi friends put it well when it comes to a state of sentience as a state of energy being capable of being "contained" in a transient locus of manifestation. He said " truth" which can be compared to a sentient state,( in energetic terms) is a clear transparent medium ( unconditioned) and it takes on the color of it's container."
In esoteric Christian terms this is the parable of the "outer darkness" and "the gnashing of teeth" ( Gurdjieff would say pouring from the empty into the void)as a rather irritated commentary on the container judging water by it's color, which is what the father of cybernetics called "a self referential" closed system, when in reality, it is an open one.In Buddhism, in the conceptual model of a snake eating it's tale, a state creates volitional impulses as accrued and developed in a superimposition of structure, like the DNA of sentience that manifests form by a set range of replication, as opposed to the form being an existential, randomly created locus of manifestation. Just as in the physical nature of human conception, this patterning of replicating the stored memory preconditions bias the infants potential. The same process may apply in reverse to either transitional or non material consciousness as it transits to an origin state. Some ghosts are caught in the mesh of perception being a self fulfilling prophecy. The deconstruction of these states in the basis for both the Egyptian and Tibetan books of The Dead. Imagine if our civilization as it is constituted passed away, and all that was left of quantum physics as it is now applied to the structure of the mind was erased from all the databases and transferred in a oral tradition which was then transferred to ritual, generation to generation as a living reenactment of memory. Perhaps the Tarot was a book of psychology rather than fortune telling cards. Ouspensky's deep irony may be a truism that cultural memory of a future past, where an advanced knowledge on the surface may seem primitive, vouchsafed as "sacred knowledge." that succeeding generations beginning from the ground up in amnesia follow the pride of ignorance toward it's rediscovery, and discount knowledge as superstition.
This theme of preconditioned states is repeated again and again in five different traditional developmental approaches to this conceptual model. Consider the question then, is memory a fulcrum for a transitional state between yesterday and tomorrow, and what lies behind memory itself? What is behind then, in terms of memory, in this extension of it's state, a non human sentience? If the universe is made of the same energetic "stuff" whether it is a automobile or a hummingbird or a mind, is there a bridging or enfolding entanglement as a transient carrier between ourselves and another non human species? In Part Two, I want to share with you a very bizarre experience that occurred to yours truly, not once but twice..and what about that ambulating walking stick? Are all these bizarre challenges a figment of an over active proportion of yin to yang? Good question for the next ritual self exorcism in this public medium between you and I
