Angel
Here is what he has to say:
As a paranormal investigator, I am doing research to find out more about life after death and the paranormal. There are many investigators out there, but I think I am different in the sense that I do research to find out what spirits are scientifically. Many people take pictures of spirits, record their voices via EVP, and experience paranormal activity, but no one ever stops and thinks, "Why can't I see orbs, but I can photograph them, and what exactly do they consist of?" or "Why can't I hear EVPs, but my recorder does?".
That is exactly what I'm trying to figure out. Here are some of my theories on paranormal activity, they are scientifically based, but I think many of you will enjoy reading them. I hope those of you who are new to the field can learn something, and even those who have been doing this longer than me might learn a thing or two.
EMF Detectors and battery drain
The EMF detector is one of the most widely used tool of ghost hunters. But, recently I have come to believe that spirits aren't actually producing an unexplainable electromagnetic field, but are actually creating current in our meters. What I mean is, an EMF detector works by magnifying the current supplied by an inductor. When an AC or quickly moving DC EMF is present, it will create a current in the coil that is then displayed by the EMF meter. I believe that spirits are actually somehow adding or taking current away from our meters, so they go off, but it isn't from an EMF. This would explain the battery drain we get, instead of adding current, they are taking it away. I think that spirits are either sucking the energy out of meters or other battery supplied devices, which would create battery drain, or adding current to the meters, which would make EMF meters go off. (Note: One of the team members told him that one time they had NO battery in her gaussmaster, when it started going off). Capacitor discharge in the meter would constitute the meter going off for a split second, but there is no way to make the meter go off for as long as it did (at least a minute). This could be because the spirit was adding current to the meter, enough to make it turn on with no (visible) power source.
Another possibility is that the EMF fields we encounter are actually DC (direct current) fields, with no natural oscillation. This would mean that in order for a spirit to set off an EMF meter, they would have to move very quickly over it, causing a quick spike. The anomalies are very frequent, small quick hits on the meter, but occasionally you get long repeated hits via EMF arrays. If these are DC fields, in order to set off an array for as long as they do (several minutes sometimes), they would have to create an AC field around it, by circling around it rapidly, or moving back and forth very quickly. This could account for some pictures of plasmoids that are obtained, where there is clear movement, pulsation, or shaking of the plasmoid.
EVPs
EVP (electronic voice phenomena) is probably one of the most bizarre and entertaining form of paranormal activity. You set a sensitive tape or digital recorder up, and ask say something like "What is your name?". You let the recorder run for a minute or so while you are quiet, and then listen. You hear a faint voice in the background saying "George".
Why couldn't you hear the voice when you recorded it?
Many people think that spirits are imprinting their voice on the magnetic reel of the tape. This is not true, it is virtually impossible for a spirit to do this, and if they could, how would they know how the recorder encodes the voice? A tape recorder puts the input from the microphone through a series of filters that encodes the input into a series of magnetic pulses that imprints onto the tape. Also, many EVPs have been captured on digital recorders, which use no magnetic tape. Bring me an EVP recorded with a tape recorder that has NO microphone input on it (ie, plug a headphone adapter in with no headphones or cut an 1/8" plug and plug it in) and I'll believe that spirits imprint their voice onto tapes.
Here's how I think it works:
Spirits could be using their own EMF to oscillate at the frequency of a voice. People always report strange electromagnetic field (EMF) readings when an EVP is captured. A microphone works by using a coil of wire with a magnet in the middle of the coil. When there is sound, the magnet vibrates and produces a small current through the coil, which is amplified and then recorded. I think spirits are changing the frequency of the EMF they create to create a current through the coil. I am currently testing this theory with a modified gaussmaster which will let me listen to the highly amplified frequency and also count the frequency on my frequency counter.
Heres a little experiment you can try that shows his theory:
Take a coil of some sort (either a homemade one, or take the cone and magnet out of a speaker), and plug it into a radio's headphone out line. Turn the radio to a station and turn the volume all the way up. Verify that you hear NO noise at all. Even though you don't hear noise, the coil is still producing an EMF that is oscillating at variable frequencies. Now take a tape recorder (or digital) with an external microphone and begin recording. Move the microphone close to the coil. You still don't hear anything with your ears, but remember the EMF is producing a current through the microphone's coil. Now stop the recorder and go back and listen. Wow, you can hear the radio station the radio was tuned to when the microphone was close to the coil!
This is what I think spirits may be doing, actually using the EMF they create to oscillate at the frequency of a human voice. Some experiments I am doing now is using a 4 track recorder with inputs of a microphone AND a bare coil. If the microphone picks up an EVP, I can go back and listen to the coil track and see if it picked up the EVP, too.
Ectoplasmic Chaos:
Why do photos of "ectoplasm" as we call it seem to show up in random patterns, almost like smoke or steam? I think this is because the ectoplasm is ionic in nature. It either has a positive or negative electric charge, so they will cling to the oppositely charged particles in the air. So depending on how the air ions are arranged will affect how the ecto shows up. Theoretically, we could use a negative or positive ion generator to actually attract ectoplasm in the area, and affect the ectoplasmic chaos. Theoretically being the key word here
Orbs & Apparitions
Here are two things I know for a fact about orbs: They are pulsating at many frequencies, and they either emit or reflect the near-infared spectrum of light.
Here's a new thought: Maybe spirits aren't actually emitting infared light, but they just reflect it more than regular light. This would explain why our eyes can't see them most of the time, and why our infared night-shot cameras do. Also, the only reason we see color, green for example, is because the green wavelength of light is what it reflects. It will absorb all other light bands. Could spirits/orbs actually be a substance that is INFARED in color? They would just absorb all visible light wavelengths, theoretically making them invisible. Then, the little bit of infared light our camera flash puts out is actually reflecting off them, making them visible in our pictures. This could be why light anomalies tend to be bright in the field of our IR extender lights and tend to fade, the IR light is reflecting off them because they are IR in color.
The fact that orbs and apparitions are pulsating at different frequencies would explain why you can normally see though apparitions and orbs. It is like watching a movie reel, the pictures are there at 45 hertz, but there is a millisecond in between frames where there is nothing. This lets you see through apparitions and orbs.
You can see in photos where orbs moved and seemed to pulsate throughout the exposure. For example, I have a photo taken with a 1/29th of a second exposure with an orb that looks like a dumbell in it. The orb isn't actually shaped like a dumbell, but it in that 1/29th of a second the orb faded, moved up a little bit, and then got brighter. This would mean that this particular orb was oscillating somewhere around 60 hertz, give or taken a few hertz. This particular frequency isn't true to all spirits though, some oscillate at faster rates and some at slower rates.
Cameras see orbs more than the human eye because they are more sensitive to infared light. I can turn on an infared LED in pitch black and see no light, but if I take a picture of it, I will see a light in the picture. Try pointing your digital camera at your TV remote control light while holding down a channel button and you'll see what I mean. Digital cameras are more sensitive to the infared spectrum than regular 35mm film (although infared film is available for 35mm cameras).
