Kolkata, August 26: When ?Dr Bhootbaji? took stage today, he promised to keep his young audience enthralled with his ?supernatural powers?. True to his words, a hushed silence descended on the room when the magician on stage pierced his tongue with a sharp six-inch long needle.
The young crowd, mostly school-goers, stared with horror, and then heaved a sigh of relief when the needle was taken out with ease. But when ?Dr Bhootbaji? put fire in his mouth, the crowd gasped with disbelief.
The show was a unique campaign launched by the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM) to introduce young impressionable minds to the powers of science. While in the first half, ?Dr Bhootbaji? demonstrated his ?supernatural? skills to perfection, the second half was devoted to explaining the scientific rationale behind the tricks. And ?Dr Bhootbaji? was BITM?s educational officer Ramen Banerjee.
Aptly titled ?Science Magic Miracle: A show of science tricks?, the BITM?s initiative comes close on the heels of newspaper reports of clay idols drinking milk. Banerjee demonstrated how the scientific forces of ?adhesion? and ?surface tension? come to play in this phenomenon with a spoonful of water and a plastic dog.
?The idea is to make these young minds aware that every phenomenon in the world, supernatural or otherwise, has a convincing scientific logic,? said Banerjee.
At the end of the show, Banerjee was flooded with a barrage of questions. ?I was at awe when I read about the incidents of idols drinking milk. But now I am convinced,? said Sushen Mistry, a student of Good News Children Education Mission in Baruipur.
The shows, conducted in the BITM premises, will be held from August 26 to September 9, at 3 pm and 4 pm. It will be free for all visitors to BITM having a valid entry ticket.
