A girl who lives in a house in Panther Valley out in Warren County described to her grandmother what the ghost looked like.
The ghost is a nicely dressed man, and the granddaughter had seen him several times. The grandmother thought it was just a child's imagination, until she caught a glimpse of him out of the corner of her eye.
That's when she volunteered her home to be inspected by the New Jersey Ghost Hunters Society, a Parsippany-based group of 327 enthusiasts from around the state who bill themselves as New Jersey's largest paranormal investigating and training organization.
Founder and director L'Aura Hladik of Hackettstown recounted the brief summary of the apparent haunted home in Warren County during the group's meeting on Sunday to record "The Deadline," a 30-to-60-minute Podcast of news and events associated with NJGHS.
They bristle at the notion of being labeled "Ghostbusters," from the popular 1980s movie. They research, and document.
"We're paranormal researchers, it's mostly research to find definitive proof, scientific proof of spirits," said member Gregory Irish, 45, who attended the group's meeting Sunday.
The 2006 New Jersey Ghost Conference will be held the weekend of April 22 in Hackettstown at the Community Center, and the group was busily checking off lists of things that needed to be done.
Vendors needed to be accommodated, reservations made at hotels, and there were unanswered questions ? such as what kind of refreshments would be served and how many paranormal authors would speak. All this needed to be straightened out, and the group hammered out the logistics.
They're looking for people in the Warren/Morris area to volunteer their homes for inspection that weekend. The one in Panther Valley is set for that weekend.
Hladik founded the group back in 1998 after she attended an International Ghost Hunters Society meeting in Pennsylvania. There wasn't a New Jersey chapter at the time, so Hladik created one and affiliated it with the international organization.
The goal of any ghost hunter is to photograph a full-body apparition ? which usually is a glowing orb, a round ball of light.
The group recalled a 1998 investigation of the Cumberland Mansion in Maywood. Laura Lindemann of Bogota said she spotted a full-body apparition of a little girl glide by her. The group also discovered little footprints on stair carpeting.
