Curse-lifter to be set free

An Egyptian refugee who posed as a psychic curse-healer to meet and sexually assault teenage girls -- one as young as 13 -- has successfully fought off deportation, his lawyer says.
Ibrahim Yousif Abdulaziz Al-Kafage, 48, who lived in Toronto, was jailed for 10 years in October, 1996 for four counts of molesting, threatening and extorting young girls who had visited him to have curses against them lifted.
A plan to deport him by classifying him as a danger to the public was overruled by Justice Michael Kelen in an Aug. 3 decision that stated there was no assurance Al-Kafage, who had been tortured in Egypt, would not be harmed again in that country.
YOUNGEST WAS 13
His Ottawa lawyer Dean Adema said, "immigration officials tried to make him a danger to Canada so he can be deported ... he is not removable because a danger opinion has been set aside."
"Most of the applicant's sexual assault victims were young women of Egyptian descent," Justice Michael Kelen wrote. "The youngest victim was 13 years old. While purporting to lift curses that had been placed on young women, (Al-Kafage) sexually assaulted them." Al-Kafage was ordered by the National Parole Board to report all relationships with females and have no contact with minors unless accompanied by an adult.
He was "actively seeking out relationships with vulnerable women with young daughters" when arrested on a Correctional Services Canada warrant in 2005, court heard.
