Shop owner feels pull to steer people in right direction
Jen Marks said she is stepping into the family business, even though she is the first one to make it official.
Marks, 30, is a psychic. Her mother and grandfather both had "the gift" but never made money from it, she said.
"Friends would come by and ask my mother questions and she would tell them if she saw something," she said. "But she never made a business out of it."
Marks opened Psychic Readings by Jen two months ago at 357 E. College St. Before that, she had her business in Chicago and Los Angeles for a combination of 15 years as a professional psychic.
Growing up in California, Marks said she never realized she was different from other kids. Because her mother and grandfather were also psychic, she said she just assumed she would be, too.
"Since it was already in my family, I knew it was something I would have," she said.
Marks said she practices tarot card and psychic readings, palm readings, aura and spiritual cleansings and chakra balancing.
She said she is 98 percent accurate, according to her clients. During the 2 percent of times when she is wrong, Marks said, it only is in her prediction of when something will happen to a person.
"I have never really been wrong, and that sometimes scares me," she said.
Marks said she can see people's auras and feel their energies.
"It shows colors, and it tells me what kind of person they are," she said. "It looks like a rainbow surrounding a person's body."
Marks said all kinds of people come to her for advice. She said she has some regular clients but also people who come in for entertainment.
Marks said she is not in the business of lying to people about their lives or about things that are difficult to hear.
"In my reading, I don't tell people something they want to hear," she said.
There will always be people who are skeptical, Marks said. Sometimes though, she said those skeptics become regular customers.
"It's not for everyone," she said. "A lot of people are skeptical. Some come in and are no longer skeptical."
Marks said she feels as though God gave her the gift of being psychic to help people go in the right direction in their lives.
