A GROUP of paranormal experts spent the weekend at Muncaster Castle debating whether things really do go bump in the night.
The conference, last weekend was organised by Dr Jason Braithwaite from Birmingham University who has been investigating Muncaster’s “ghosts” for more than 17 years.
Top scientists, sceptics, psychics and believers in the paranormal discussed a range of topics including ghosts, UFOs, out of body experiences and conspiracy beliefs.
Dr Braithwaite said after the event: “The conference really has exceeded my expectations. This event was unusual in bringing both sceptics like me and believers together to discuss these controversial subjects. The quality of the speakers and audience has been outstanding.
“It’s been a rare chance to discuss these fascinating subjects in such an interesting place.
“Everyone interested in the paranormal, whether they’re a sceptic or a believer, wants to know the story of Muncaster.”
Dr Braithwaite discussed his latest research at the conference and delegates also had the chance to look round the castle, including spending time in the Tapestry Room, where many people have reported unusual experiences.
The keynote speaker was prominent sceptic and TV personality Professor Chris French from Goldsmiths College in London, an expert in the field of parapsychology. He was the resident skeptic on Channel 5’s Britain’s Psychic Challenge and ITV’s Haunted Homes.
Muncaster’s Peter Frost-Pennington wrapped up the conference with a talk on living in England’s “most haunted” house.
He said: “It’s been a really interesting weekend. At Muncaster we obviously provide entertainment and many people want to come and see for themselves whether there is anything in all the ghost stories.
“But as this conference has shown, proper research is also very important. Whether or not anything supernatural actually happens in places like this, understanding what lies behind people’s experiences is very important to society.”
