Jun 20, 2006 ? Pennsylvania State Police said this morning the graffiti found last week at a church in southern York County was a devil head, a few pentagrams and the names of two founding leaders of modern satanic thought.
Most famous of the two names found painted at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 11894 Susquehanna Trail, is Allister Crowley, who gained fame during the counterculture revolution in the 1960s and 1970s.
Crowley and his thoughts were made famous through alleged connections to, among others, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne and The Beatles.
Several Web sites identify Levey, the other name found at the church, as a reference to LeVey Satanism, or Hedonism. Followers of Hedonism basically believe that if it feels good, do it.
How or why the symbols appeared on the church remains a mystery. As of this morning, police were still investigating who could have painted the graffiti, said Lt. Pat Gebhart, commander of the Loganville barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police.
According to a state police report released Monday, the graffiti was discovered sometime Thursday morning. Troopers suspect the damage happened between Wednesday around 9:15 p.m. and Thursday at 8 a.m.
Anyone with information is asked to call Pennsylvania State Police at Loganville at 428-1011.
