When Anita Goodrich walked into the Red Dog Tavern last Sunday morning at 2:30 a.m., she immediately sensed the presence of a spirit.
Without any prior knowledge of the pub's history, she accurately named him.
"She knew he was important to the bar," explains her mother, Dee Freedman.
"We get the feeling he's hanging around because that's a place that was a comfort to him and that he was involved in."
Sunday marked The Hauntings Research Group's second visit to the historic Hunter Street West pub. The team arrived with video cameras, a baby monitor and audio recorders.
Red Dog manager Chris Potter called in the team of researchers to investigate reported paranormal sightings by both staff member and patrons.
While sitting in his second floor office after closing time, Mr. Potter recalls looking over at the security monitor and seeing a gentleman walk across the bar and then through a wall.
"There was nobody around; my reaction was 'Wow,'" he says.
As the team of researchers performed its investigation, Mr. Potter explained what he saw that night.
"They said he was going down a hallway but I said what hallway?"
According to the researchers, there was an old hallway on that side of the pub that led to the washrooms.
While investigating, Ms Freedman sensed the presence of a gentleman who had once lived on the second floor.
"I picked up on him and described him in detail, and one of the employees knew who he was," she says.
Ms Goodrich accurately sought out another gentleman who had died of a heart attack while coming down the stairs from the second floor.
While the team tried to communicate with one of the spirits, Mr. Potter saw the hair of one of the investigator's hair part but there was no draft in the pub.
The team wrapped up its investigation at 7 a.m. Ms Freedman says they are still analyzing all their data.
"We haven't found anything yet that's tangible," she explains.
Ms Freedman notes 80 per cent of the time, the team can explain and or re-create what people think are paranormal sightings.
The Hauntings Research Group is not comprised of "ghostbusters." Instead, its members collect data to try and find a logical explanation for supernatural phenomena.
"As long as there is something that could have caused it and we're not sure, we can't count it.
"We're trying to separate the urban legend and the stories from the facts."
The Hauntings Research Group is planning a third visit to The Red Dog in the next few weeks.
