Although paranormal investigator Noah Voss has never seen a full-spectral ghost, he has encountered a ?fair amount of things? that he can?t quite explain.
Voss, 28, conducts investigations on the out-of-the-ordinary. He receives reports from people living in ?Wisconsin and Malaysia, and everyplace in between,? who claim to have seen ghosts, UFOs, Bigfoot, crop circles, angels, etc. He uses the equipment that he sells on his Web site GetGhostGear.com to try and find answers about the paranormal for others as well as himself.
Last year, Voss went to Walworth County to investigate the sighting of a large, hairy creature. Witnesses said the creature was unlike any animal they had seen before. During the investigation, Voss and his team found nothing except some coyotes. Recently there have been two more sightings of this creature, which people refer to as ?The Beast of Bray Road.?
Voss is aware of the many rumors in circulation about parts of Whitewater being haunted, including buildings on campus such as the Center of the Arts; Clem, Fricker and Knilans halls; and the Delta Zeta house. He visited Whitewater while he was in college, but he has never seen or experienced any paranormal activity here. Even though many of his investigations are inconclusive of paranormal activity, he never completely rules out the possibility of a haunting. ?I definitely think most of the legends have some vein of truth,? he said.
On a typical investigation, Voss records everything he sees and experiences using special equipment, such as infrared thermometers, thermal imaging cameras, spectrometers and metal detectors.
A woman once asked Voss if she could purchase one of his ?ghost detectors.? He told her that she was ?making the assumption that one knows what a ghost is.? The equipment that he uses and sells does not detect the paranormal; it ?eliminates possibilities.?
Voss does not get paid for his investigations, and he does not have the resources to investigate all of the reports he receives. ?Most people assume that there?s some government grant that we?re working off of, but in reality, it?s just our day jobs that we?re working off of,? he said.
Voss resides in Sun Prairie and works as a fire safety inspector by day. He has appeared in UFO documentaries and ABC?s television show ?Scariest Places on Earth,? and has been a guest on many radio programs. He is planning on publishing a book on UFOs in 2007.
While others enjoy investigating the paranormal for the adrenaline rush or for spiritual reasons, Voss enjoys the educational aspects that the field offers. ?I really like learning, as nerdy as that may sound,? he said. Voss loves the paranormal because of all of the unknowns that are available for him to explore.
?At the end of the day, I?m left with more questions than answers, but that?s okay, because I like questions,? he said.
