The Cookes have been on television in various capacities in search of their daughter. In a couple of cases, they sought out famous psychics to give them answers.
KXAN NBC Austin's Jenny Hoff looked into what the psychics said and what detectives have to say about their validity.
Sylvia Browne is well-known psychic and a regular guest on the Montel Williams Show.
She is also a psychic Robert Cooke sought out in a desperate attempt to find his daughter.
"It gives them an opportunity to hold on to some kind of hope," Eric Poteet with the Round Rock Police said.
Brown said Rachel's killer was named Bill or Billy, white, in his 30s and from California. It is not an exact description of the man now charged, Michael Keith Moore.
Other psychics have also gotten involved. On the show Insider, James Van Praagh said, "I got Rachel coming through to me saying, 'There's an auto store not far from where I used to live, and there's a mechanic that worked there with a blue and white shirt and he knows something about what happened to me."
"When you're left with nothing, you will tend to grab whatever presents itself," Poteet said.
Poteet says he often gets calls from psychics claiming to have the answers to unsolved cases.
"We've had people that claim to be psychics call us. I don't want to unnecessarily disparage these people. But, so far no one has called us with any information that's been of any value," Poteet said.
We decided to visit a local psychic who's been selling her services in Austin for more than 30 years.
Madame Ruth claims to have had visions since she was seven years old. She's also one of those psychics who have called detectives with information.
"It will just hit you. Sometimes you can see it in your eyes. Sometimes you can feel it," Madame Ruth said.
In Cooke's case, several psychics have claimed the truth.
