Inside San Diego's most hallowed haunted houses, the San Diego Ghost Hunters seek a dialogue with the dead.
Don't tell Maritza Skandunas, her son Vinnie and her friend Dawn there's no such things as ghosts. They've got pictures to prove it.
"That's myself in the 200-year-old mirror. This is Dawn, and this is our ghost. She's wearing a long blue skirt, and when we zoom in on it, it has big red roses," Maritza said.
She's no newcomer to the paranormal.
"When I was five years old, I started seeing things at the foot of my bed," Maritza said.
For the past two and-a-half years, San Diego Ghost Hunters have been photographing, recording and documenting things that go bump in the night. On this night, we're hanging out at San Diego's most spooked domicile -- the Whaley House in Old Town.
"This is a very active house, when we work here late at night we have five spirits," Maritza said.
And just in case you've forgotten what you learned on your junior high school field trip here, administrative aide Dean Glass gives us the 411.
"This house was built in 1857 by Thomas Whaley," Glass said.
Whaley and his wife Anna had six kids. For a while, the Whaley House served the county courthouse, and was home to a theatre troupe. Tonight, I'm hoping to meet the Whaleys. Hopefully, we can share a few ghostly photos.
Still not convinced? How about a little ghostly conversation, recorded in an old cemetery just down the block?
"He takes a breath, and then he starts to laugh and he says, '77 years old,' and then when I ask him are you a man or are you a woman, when I said 'woman' he takes a big sigh," Maritza said.
The night we spent in the Whaley House, no one was walking or talking. So Maritza broke out the devining rods to communicate with the other side. When the rods cross, the answer is 'yes.'
"Do we have a presence in this room?" Maritza asked. "Yes."
Upstairs in the old theatre, it was my turn to hold the rods.
In order to believe in ghosts, you must believe what you can't see, and see what you can't believe.
