GHOSTLY spirits, the eternal staple of all good Hallowe'en tales, may be more real than most people think...
I was recently asked to spend a night in Clitheroe Castle museum with members of the Clitheroe Paranormal Investigation Team, an invitation I accepted with relish, albeit a little trepidation.
That feeling did not disappear when we arrived in the 18th Century museum, and certainly did not disappear when the lights were switched off and we split up into our respective groups.
Medium Mr Harry Dahmke was our link with "the other side" and it was not long before he sensed the presence of a little girl he believed was called Rosie.
Rosie, it appears, was a little girl aged around eight, who had lived and died in the house which later became the museum. What happened next would shake even the most staunch of sceptics ? a member of the public with our group said she felt a presence touch her arm, and immediately burst into tears.
An overactive imagination? Perhaps, but when you consider that the lady's sister in the other group also cried at the presence of a little girl, completely unaware of her sibling's similar experience, then you are forced to think again.
Could this be the proof of restless spirits that the group was looking for? A second room, and in it a possible relative of Rosie, was sensed by Harry who said he felt the name Richard coming through.
Richard was Rosie's father, the master of the house, and a man feared by his servants according to our pensive medium. In a bid to channel our energies, the group held hands and stood in a circle.
Impartial observer Mr Neil Duffy captured on camera what happened next. The master of the house obviously did not take kindly to us being in his home and began to stomp angrily. Soon, one of our group developed a sore throat and felt as if someone was trying to strangle her.
Again it could all be hokum. I certainly did not feel any presence, and the only thing I dreaded was a trip to the toilet. Yet, unexplained doubts still kept nagging away at me.
Mr Duffy, our aforementioned observer, is a sceptic and a man not easily swayed, yet even he admitted to feeling a cold sensation brush past him. Shortly afterwards, Neil discovered his unzipped trouser pocket had become zipped.
All this happened in a room in which another member saw a shadow and felt distinctly uneasy. The customary "haunted house" footsteps were also heard.
At the start of the night the conscientious members of the team set up a video camera at the bottom of a flight of steps. A monitor screening the image did intermittently show up bright orbs racing around, again something which has not been explained.
As our investigative night drew to a close, I can honestly say I wanted it to continue. There were more than enough incidents to make the sceptical think twice, but as ever no solid proof.
Clitheroe Paranormal Investigators continue in their search for the unexplained. Maybe you should call them! ...
