Susan Ciminelli can read your internal problems through your skin
Susan Ciminelli is a psychic. She doesn't use Tarot cards, crystal balls or even palms to see the future. She reads skin. She can take one look at your face and probably know more about you than the shrink whose couch you occupy every week.
"Whatever you're going through mentally or emotionally can be read through the skin," Ciminelli said during a personal appearance at Wynn Las Vegas' The Drugstore. "I know from where a breakout happens, what issues it's connected to."
To support her claim, Ciminelli offers an anecdote. The receptionist at her spa on the top level of Bergdorf Goodman's in New York City came to work with an inflamed pimple on the side of her nose recently. Ciminelli noticed the blemish as she was leaving the office and called her employee from her car. Avoiding any small talk, she got right to the point.
"The first thing I said was, 'Have you been having stomach problems lately?' " Ciminelli recalled.
Once she got past the surprising intuition, the receptionist answered that she was in fact having stomach problems and had been kept up late at night because of them.
"I knew something wasn't right," Ciminelli said. "Her skin is usually flawless."
The skin specialist recommended lemon, liquid acidophilous and the spot treatment with oil control formula and sea clay mask from her own line of products. Within days both pimple and pain were gone.
To alleviate a problem she targets its root, which Ciminelli believes always lies within. As she tells it, the skin is the mirror of your internal environment. To demonstrate her point, Ciminelli used a former president as an example. "Just look at Bill Clinton," she said. "He had serious heart problems and you could tell just by looking at him." Clinton, who underwent heart surgery in '04 had broken capillaries and redness on his nose, both -- according to Ciminelli -- point to a poor heart condition.
The skin guru makes recognizing and making the association between the skin and the insides seem simple. She quickly rattles off a list of skin areas and their matching inner health problems (see sidebar). What's not so simple, though, is targeting the remedy, which can vary from chewing food slower (breakouts on the forehead, small intestine problem) to taking a milk thistle supplement (skin problems in between the brows, liver concerns). It requires close examination of a client's lifestyle coupled with regular monitoring, during which time a number of treatments are used.
Ciminelli incorporates massage, body treatments, facials, home remedies, nutrition advisement and health supplements to treat her clients. Depending on the condition of the skin and the lifestyle of the client, Ciminelli's treatments will vary but the specialist said she hasn't yet seen someone for whom she couldn't find a solution.
"I've had clients who wouldn't listen, though," she clarified. "But if they listen then I can help them. Most people who come to me are ready to change."
She estimates a first-time visit with her, facial and peel included, to run close to $1,000 after all the recommended skin-care products and supplements have been tallied. A facial with a Susan Ciminelli Day Spa staff member runs relatively less than one with Ciminelli herself ($150 vs. $225) but her schedule is usually tight and her services are at another, much higher, caliber. Ciminelli's celebrity client list alone runs long enough to keep her busy (Jennifer Lopez, Martha Stewart, Al Pacino, Cindy Crawford, Susan Lucci and Regis Philbin, to name a few).
Her method of cross-referencing the geography of a blemish with a cause related to an internal issue is what sets her apart in the now highly competitive world of skin care. Where a visit to most spas is predictable -- Enya music, dimmed lights, aromatic products and a locker check -- her holistic treatments stand alone.
As for her own skin, the 50-year-old could easily pass for late 30s with wrinkles as sparse as that of a freshly pressed shirt. She simply follows the philosophy she's stuck to for years, treating her skin from the inside out. That, and she realizes skin care can only take you so far. Like she tells her clients, "I can't change your karmic destiny. I can only improve your quality of life."
