CLAYTON ? Astrologist Mary Bauer believes in reincarnation, just maybe not the past lives her friend psychic Howard Feldman said she had.
"Like all of the rest of us, Mary has had many, many, many past lives," Feldman said. "She has been the master astrologers who taught most of the old ancient masters."
"Whoo! Hoo! That's news to me," Bauer piped, stopping in mid-bite of her salad. "I didn't know that I had taught them!"
Bauer traces her interest in astrology ? in this life, anyway ? to when she was a teenager or younger.
"Why people do what they do has always fascinated me," she said.
"You can kind of read it just like a psychological profile. It's right there in their chart."
Bauer has been preparing astrological readings from her Mountaintop Center for Self-Development, 6967 Salem Pike, in Clayton. She's been a professional astrologist for about 25 years.
The scientific community doesn't give astrology much respect, despite the huge debt it owes to 5,000 years of stargazers.
In his new book, The Fated Sky: Astrology in History, author Benson Bobrick said astrology is responsible for the beginning of the study of astronomy, the calculation of time, mathematics and other specialties. Logarithms simplified calculations to prepare horoscopes.
Bauer said knowledge gained from the millennia of observations is what astrologers depend on today.
"The ancients watched the planets and the stars in the night sky and they noticed when the planets were doing this or when the moon was full, that the behavior of mankind seemed to occur again," Bauer said.
"They noticed that on such and such a day, when the planets were doing this and this, that everybody was having a party and everything was wonderful. And then they noticed there was another time when everybody was at war.
"Through observation they began to put together a whole encyclopedia about it. This has been added to and subtracted from over the years. Now, astrology is almost an adjunct to things like psychology and philosophy, because, after a lot of study, you realize that when the planets are in a certain position, you can almost guarantee that people will behave in a certain way."
The desire to see what's coming over the horizon or understand present circumstances brings clients to Bauer.
She begins by preparing a "natal chart," which gives the locations of the sun, moon, planets and stars at the moment of a person's birth.
Those who embrace astrology believe that each of the celestial objects present contributes traits, skills and weaknesses in this life.
"The whole thing is up to you. It's up to the individual. A lot of people think that it's fate and they can't do anything about it. "I can't help it, that's my sign.' And that's just not true.
"If you choose to work with it, you will know what to expect ahead of time," Bauer said.
"You know that this is the time that is going to push my buttons, so if you can go at it with patience and know that it will pass, then you ace the course."
