LONDON. The Ministry of Defence has just released a previously classified report which shows that it financed ESP and remote viewing experiments in 2002.
The purpose was to see if certain individuals had psychic powers which could be used to ?view? objects or individuals at a distance. The conclusion was that there was ?little value? in using such skills in defence of the nation.
But that is not to say they were a failure. The commercial researchers who were contracted to conduct the tests at a secret location, at a cost of ?18,000, were unable to persuade 12 ?known? psychics to take part in the tests. But 28 per cent of the novices who were recruited made close guesses at the contents of sealed brown envelopes whilst blindfolded.
The targets included pictures of a knife, Mother Teresa and ?an Asian individual?.
An official statement from the MOD said: ?The remote viewing study was conducted to assess claims made in some academic circles and to validate research carried out by other nations on psychic ability.?
An MOD spokesperson told www.ParanormalReview.com: ?The cost of this study was modest compared with others of this size and complexity. It aimed to investigate theories on capabilities to gather information remotely about what people may be seeing and to determine the potential value, if any, of such theories to Defence. The study concluded that remote viewing theories had little value to the MOD and was taken no further.
Though the MOD?s comments make no reference to the significance of the experiments? timing, the fact that they followed so closely on the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in the US suggests that the security services may have been testing the possibility of ?remotely viewing? hidden weapons or even tracking Osama bin Laden.
The report ? not yet available on the Internet ? has been released under the Freedom of Information Act. Until the statement put out by the MOD confirming its existence, there had been no indication of a military-financed paranormal study in the UK.
It is widely known, on the other hand, that the Central Intelligence Agency in the US conducted a massive study of remote viewing and other psychic abilities over a 24-year period, to investigate its potential use within the intelligence community. Ingo Swann (left) was one of its star subjects.
At the end of this research project, the American Institutes for Research was asked to review the research and operations, issuing its report on 28 November 1995.
As a result, the CIA concluded that a statistically significant effect had been demonstrated in the laboratory, but that there was no case in which ESP had provided data that had ever been used to guide intelligence operations.
Remote viewing has since become big business, particularly in the US, where a number of people offer courses to teach the technique.
