The only thing luckier than getting married July 7 this year would be doing it with a four-leaf clover inside your shoe, a rabbit?s foot snapped to your garter, and a horseshoe dangling from the altar.
Brides- and grooms-to-be say it?s a once-in-a-century type of wedding date. With the quirky numerical designation of 7-7-07, they believe July 7 is the day ? knock on wood ? to marry.
?It?s been the big buzz of the year,? said Jennifer Judy Fyffe, bridal show manager at Today?s Bride, a Northeast Ohio bridal planning magazine, which also puts on four shows a year.
?If you?re a gambler at all, that?s probably the day to get married,? said Tim Reinhart, owner of Santangelo Catering. He already has three receptions that day ? in Canton, Massillon and Fairlawn.
Lucky day is a Saturday
In Ohio, June and July traditionally are the busiest months for weddings. And since July 7 happens to fall on a Saturday, it?s shaping up to be perhaps the busiest wedding day in recent memory.
?It?s an easy date to remember,? said 24-year-old Amy Adorjan, of Navarre, who began planning her July 7 wedding to 21-year-old Stephen Maple of Brewster a year ago.
It?s the kind of anniversary a husband isn?t likely to forget, said Adorjan, an Akron General Medical Center nurse. She selected the day for its multiple sevens, initially not realizing how popular it might become. Her big arrangements are complete, but she still must book deals for flowers and a DJ.
Fyffe said she has heard tales of a wedding official booking ceremonies at her house every half hour that day to accommodate the bustling interest.
Based on information in his wedding database for the Akron-Canton area, an average of 145 weddings are planned for each Saturday this year, according to Jim Frericks of Today?s Bride. His numbers reveal a 42 percent jump on July 7.
Wedding coordinator Natalie Ann Young, owner of It?s Your Party!, a Canton event-planning firm, is working a wedding that day. However, a photographer and DJ she most often works with are already booked.
?For a while, it seemed like every vendor I talked to said, ?Oh my gosh, we?re already booked,? ? Young said.
The few weeks after the Fourth of July, and before the Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival, usually allow employees at Canton Chair Rental to catch their collective breath.
Not this year.
?We?re seeing a lot of requests already,? said owner Tim Maloney.
His Perry Township business rents all sorts of wedding gear ? from chairs and tents to lattice arches, brass candelabras and fountains, money boxes, trees and plants.
Though the date is filling up fast, there?s hope for procrastinators.
?It was one of the first dates we booked,? said Jeff McCall, owner of McCall?s Restaurant Pub and catering in Canton Township, adding that he turned away several other inquiries for the day. ?But it was also one of the first dates we had canceled.?
So, he?s free and clear again.
