DISCOVERING you can see dead people must be a frightening experience, especially if you?re just a child.
Joe Power was still at St Luke?s Primary School in Skelmersdale, when he says he first started seeing images and visions of the deceased.
?As a child I was very sensitive,? says psychic medium Joe. ?I used to see people pass over into the spirit world. It was just normal to me. It wasn?t scary or frightening at that particular time.
?I used to go into trances.?
But over the years his unusual gift was put on the back burner while he concentrated on being a youngster in Carfield.
?It was rough growing up in Skelmersdale. I grew up on a council estate,? says Joe, 40, who now lives in Ormskirk.
?Because I was very sensitive I used to know what people felt and I could read the thoughts of them not liking me. But you just had to get on with things. There wasn?t much to do for young people.
?We had to grow up with very, very little in the area.
?But I feel I was meant to grow up there. I talk with a lot of murder victims now and if I hadn?t had the experience of growing up on a rough estate I wouldn?t have been able to communicate with some of the people in the spirit world.?
Eight years ago, tragedy struck Joe?s family when his brother Denny died. Joe said he was then forced to accept his gift after realising a string of events had been forewarning him of the tragic event.
The experience shook Joe and he claims he started getting messages from dead people again, including the spirit of missing Birkdale girl Lynsey Quy.
Lynsey?s husband, Mitchell, had told police she had run off with another man but Joe says she told him she had been murdered.
She also told him where her remains had been buried and he went straight to Southport Police with the information, says Joe.
In June 2000 Mitchell Quy confessed to killing Lynsey and led police to the sites where he had buried her body parts, the same places Joe says he had told police to look.
Police have always denied that Joe gave specific information which could have led to Lynsey being found earlier.
Since then Joe has embraced his ?gift? under the guidance of renowned psychics and mediums at the Arthur Findlay College in Essex. He is clairvoyant, clairaudient and clairsentient meaning he hears, sees and senses people in the spirit world.
Joe claims he can also tap into a person?s auric field ? an energy surrounding the human body.
Over time he has learnt to control when he speaks to spirits and takes part in personal readings and stage shows.
He also teaches people how to develop their psychic and mediumship skills, running courses in Oxford, the Lake District, Hafan-y-coed, Wales, and at the Arthur Findlay College.
More recently, Power became known in the USA for being the medium who brought through the voice of John Lennon on a TV show called The Spirit of John Lennon.
Lennon allegedly made contact during the seance and the film crew recorded a message from him saying ?Peace, peace, peace, the message is Peace.?
Even with such a busy schedule Joe still finds time to investigate and work on other unsolved murder cases around the world using his gift to help grieving families.
One family he believes he can help in particular is that of Natalee Holloway, an 18-year- old student from Alabama, USA who went missing on a school trip to the Caribbean island of Aruba.
Joe says he has some information that could narrow down the search.
?I feel I have vital information on that case. A Kansas numberplate may give a clue to that disappearance a year ago,? he said.
Joe says he has only just started to enjoy being a medium and says he wouldn?t do it if he didn?t get satisfaction from it.
?I like to give proof of survival of the human soul,? he says. ?If I can give people some type of hope and closure, what?s wrong with that ? as long as its fact and genuine.?
Joe is hosting a psychic night at The Beaufort Hotel, Burscough, tonight (May 31). To book ring 01704-892655
