THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
ALAMOSA - Former San Luis Valley resident Christopher O?Brien has released his third book about strange stuff in this area: ?Secrets of the Mysterious Valley? (Adventures Unlimited Press, $19.95)
The 441-page book, loaded with numerous photographs, is available at a number of local stores. O?Brien?s first two books were ?The Mysterious Valley? and ?Enter the Mysterious Valley.?
The book's back cover notes that, ?No other region in North America features the variety and intensity of unusual phenomena found in the world?s largest alpine valley. Since 1989, Christopher O?Brien has documented hundreds of . . . strange reports of UFOs, ghosts, sorcerers, crypto-creatures and cattle mutilations, as well as portal areas, secret underground bases, mystery choppers and covert military activity. This mysterious region at the top of North America has a higher incidence of UFO reports than any other part of the continent and is the publicized birthplace of the ?cattle mutilation? mystery."
O?Brien chronicles the first publicized mutilation, that of a horse named Lady who erroneously was called Snippy in the press.
Snippy, an appaloosa was found mutilated on the King Ranch in the Sangre de Cristo foothills not far from the Great Sand Dunes and Zapata Falls in September 1967. Her owner maintained it had to be the work of extraterrestrial beings; the story went worldwide.
Besides the Snippy case, O?Brien also deals with other animal mutilations, haunted houses, strange lights, doorways to other dimensions, alien abductions and some generally spooky subjects.
He also gives 13 suggested rules of investigation.
?Appearances can be deceiving. There may be more happening than meets the eye,? he says in Rule 7.
And that rule appears to be the theme of O?Brien?s book.
O?Brien lives in Sedona, Ariz., but keeps in touch with the valley that has made him famous.
