DO YOU believe in ghosts, or are their just figments of people's imaginations?
Last week The Herald published a photograph that apparently showed a spirit standing in the middle of St Andrew Street, Hertford.
The ghost of a malnourished young girl, who laboured in a workhouse when she was alive, is said to haunt the street.
Tales of ghosts, spirits and ghouls can be found about thousands of streets and old buildings across the UK.

And Living TV's Most Haunted, in which a television crew visits a supposedly haunted site each week, attracted more than one million viewers per episode in its last series.
But do spirits really live on after people die? And if so, do they come back to haunt places?
"I believe that ghosts could exist, although there has never been any solid proof," said Sarah Thorp, 39, who was shopping in Hoddesdon when The Herald dropped by.

"If someone has died in tragic or unhappy circumstances then their spirits may be restless; we should not rule it out."
But another shopper, Kate Barrett, disagreed.
"I live in a 100-year-old house and I have never seen anything, so I don't believe in ghosts really," she said.
So what do you think? Are ghosts just products of people's imagination? Or do restless spirits wander?

Gary Bristow, 19, worker at the White Swan, Hoddesdon
"I don't really think ghosts exist, it just seems stupid to me. I just can't believe in them, it is just imagination at the end of the day. People let their imagination run away with them. People are gullible, they think they see things that aren't there. And most of the people on programmes like Most Haunted are just actors."
Ivy Charles, 72, of Cheshunt:

"Ghosts are nonsense, you may feel relatives who have passed away are close to you but I don't believe in ghosts. I had a psychic experience a few years ago though. I went to a clairvoyant who said a member of my family was dying. I thought 'who is she talking about?' When I got home I got a call from my husband's aunt who said my husband's cousin's wife was seriously ill. Maybe we do live on and have another life."
Hugh McLoughlin, 70, of the High Road, Wormley
"My grandfather was a believer in ghost stories. He told a story about a guy who went downstairs and saw a vision of animal hooves. Afterwards, he could not find one of his shoes and believed the devil had taken it. I'm sceptical, but maybe some people have extra sensory perception and can sense things others can't. If people have had an unhappy end, their spirit may be lingering in this world."
Barbara Smith, 76, of Broxbourne:
"I'm open to the idea of ghosts.
I don't disbelieve in them, but I can't say I have ever seen one either. People who go
ghost-hunting do it as a hobby, it is something I wouldn't object to doing, I would like to have a go! Sometimes when I go into old castles I suddenly feel cold, whether it is the age of the building or something else I really don't know.
